Default Blinker doesn't return to the off position

So my blinker no longer shuts off after turning right, the left side still works fine.

This is a recent issue, I'm curious how hard of a fix this is? Or what parts are needed?

Thanks Guys

Mj

It sounds like it could be the white plastic tab on your turn signal. If it works in one direction and not the other then I would remove and service with a small amount of lithium grease. I would operate the turn signal from one direction to the other and re grease as needed until you can see the tab operate smoothly.

Just an idea.

MJ the "white" tab is not shown in the above pic, if you do a search i've seen write-up on this repair.

The Switch Unit is riveted together, however they can be drilled out and replaced w/ counter sunk screws.
I've never done one myself, just replaced a defective one w/ used.

Think I can get my hands on a used one, how much work was involved in swapping them out?

Thx

About 30 mins, start w/ taking the Wheel off.
remove the small plastic cover underneath the wheel.
remove the "black" plastic bottom Pod cover
Unplug the three connection
loosen the clamp that goes around the column

You may also need to loosen the Two Pod bolts, so you can move the Pod up a bit to clear the control stalks.

Look for a Pod removal thread

I'f it's not broken, I've successfully "repaired" the no cancel by wrapping some electrical tape around the mechanism. It will give you some extra life. Basically, the plastic has gotten tired or worn down a bit and the tape gives it just enough to cancel. It's been MANY years since I;ve done this, so I don't remember specifics, but there is a "fix" out there for it.

It may just be sticking a bit.

There's not a whole lot of "extra" in the mechanism. If it gets dirty and sticks just a bit, it won't cancel properly.

Dwayne's writup on Pod removal or Odo gear replacement covers pulling off the multi switch. As was noted above, it's really just pulling off the wheel and lower trim pieces, loosen the screw clamp & wiggle it off (unplug the one "dangly" wire plug). It's a tight fit, so it may take a good bit of wiggling and pulling to get it off (Dwayne mentions this).

The little white "trigger" will pop out when the signal lever is put into the "turn" positions. Trip it the other way to cancel. If it's sticking, a bit of spray cleaner (safe for plastics & electrics) and a bit of lube (same) may well free it up.

Mine would cancel right, but not left when I first got the car. A bit of cleaning & lube got it working fine.

You wouldn't be using a MOMO steering boss by any chance? I had one on my S and it wasn't quite right for the turn signal and ended up breaking it.

I do have a Momo wheel, not sure what a "steering boss" is? but I've always had a Momo wheel on the car and the blinker issue is a recent problem.

I did this fix on my 86, and it worked fine for a long time, until other work compelled me to buy a new unit (used; wasn't much). The fix is to wrap the tape on the tab that protrudes out of the back/inside of the steering wheel hub into the hole where the white tab is on the switch unit.

Sorry, I meant steering wheel boss. The MOMO one is only suitable for the very early cars according to MOMO (at least that's what the agent told me, their documentation says Not for S/S4). I fitted one and the turn signal cancelling system was obviously under some duress and then broke. This was on an 81S. Basically the tab on the boss is in the wrong location/too big.

On the S4 I have used a Liusi one and the signal cancel works fine.

Can you post up a pic of what the Liusi hub looks like installed?

Thanks
