I replaed a "working" heater water valve..and..
The vacuum pod for my heater core valve tested just fine..but a failure mode I don't think Ive read about here, was that while it appeared to work mechanically just fine, I could BLOW through the old one in the closed position, but the new one was of course, pretty well sealed..albeit not perfectly.
Just thought I would pass that along.

yep a sign of an old valve ,
the sealing flap seal works itself out of position,
and then the valve leaks,
other things to look for with an old valve is a crumbling plastic attach collar.
NOTE always replace the valve and short hose together,
if the coolant cap is original also replace it.

please buy these from our vendors,
a good valve is required for long term performance

Roger tried the chinese valves and they were absolute crap. They failed most often IIRC in less than 6 months. I think my valve is still original and it works perfectly fine after 34 years.
Buy from one of our vendors so you know you are getting a quality part.

Mine failed this way, allowing a small amount of heated water through, enough to raise the vent temp above ambient. That's the clue that the valve is not completely competent even though it seems to close properly.

I just replaced mine, when tested manually it seemed to hold vacuum, but did not have time to test yet. But what would happen is I turned on the air conditioning and it would stay on for about 5 minutes then hot air. turn it off for 2 minutes and back on it would be fine again for 5 minutes or so and then cycle again, so I decided that would be my first step.
