Default paint fade or ....richen???

Guys,

I have recently decided to fix up the paint job on my 84S.

THe PO had done some 'basic' painting on the front right quarter panel, bonnet and door...and whilst the paint job is poor at best, the colour is a bit off.

MY paint code is 956 - Zinmettalic. Its basically a light bronze colour. THe new paint is slightly lighter and is more of a silver. I did not concern myself with this, and put it down to dodgy colour match with dodgy paint job.

Last week, I finally got around to an automotive paint supplier who said he can supply similar 2 pack system if I had the code. So i decided to take his word and purchased a litre. I had previously taken the front window cowl cover off and prepared it for paint, so I know i could use this for a test.

Opened the tin and the colour seemed a bit off, much like the PO's paint on the car....more silvery than bronze.

Painted the cowl and applied clear and gave it a chance to prove my thinking wrong.....but alas, final colour was same as that on the PO's attempt, and very different from the original paint.

My question now is- does the paint change over time. The original paint is now 30 years old, can it richen in colour. Certainly is no match now...

I really like the original colour, so am I best to get a colour match done instead of relying on the paint code. Did I just get a dud to make the paint up and maybe he got it wrong.

Any comments would be welcome.

I have a Zinnmettalic '81 Euro as well, has had some previous paintwork that does match well but my car has some serious scratches and an acid burn from the PO- I bought a pint just for touchup but had the paint shop use some sort of photo technology where they take some sort of digital photo analysis of the paint and it matches up well based on the wet paint...have not used it yet so I can't tell how well it matches once on the car and dry. I will probably end up doing a full repaint at some point soon, though. Its's a great color!

pop up the headlights and see what the painted covers look like.......they see very little sun You could even take the cover off and have a GOOD paint store color match it where they mix the formula then test paint a sample and THEN compare it to the color...They then make small adjustments and retest until it is a good match.

Try a different color primer. Some colors can be greatly altered by the base coat.

Look where the sun doesn't shine and that should be the original color.

My USA 83 is Zinc Metallic and has no hint of bronze that I have noticed its more a pewter shade, but hard to compare with an online pict, but looks about the same.

Sunlight usually lightens the color, not darkens.

Common way to match paint is to take in the gas door.
