[B]THERE, FINALLY
To Mr. Ninjaxz750.......I OWE YOU A RECREATIONAL BEVERAGE OF YOUR CHOICE!
The problem was indeed a relay. I inadvertently installed a general purpose relay in the fi spot at number 8. Car fired right up and runs like a sewing machine.
To all the other contributors, I thank you for your input and what you suggested will be kept for future reference.
Now that she's tuned, I discovered that my alt output seems to be at about 10 volts. I replaced the alt with a new unit some years ago while in the garage, but really havent run the car much with it in place.
My fuel gauge reads empty and Im thinking it might be the rear ground or sending unit connections that I havent gotten to yet because Im waiting until I remove the brown interior and replacing it with blue. Any suggestions on the last two (current) problems? Also, how do I get the inboard fog lamps on? I know that sounds silly, but the body shop disconnected and reconnected all the exterior electrics when the car was painted. I dont know what they might have connected incorrectly. Does anyone need brown 84 interior parts?

the dash gauge is often not accurate.....your alternator MIGHT be fine.

And glad you got it running that is what matters now take it out and DRIVE it !!

What James said about the voltmeter. The gauges are notoriously inaccurate. Use a meter on the jump post to see what it really is.

The fuel gauge could be a variety of things. Sender, ground, wiring to the gauge, the gauge itself.
Mine has started to act up. It reads "empty" when I first start the car, but will read correctly after a little while. I can sometimes get it to work/not work by moving the steering wheel & pod up and down. There's either a broken wire or a loose connection somewhere in the pod wiring or instrument cluster.

So the pod & cluster have to come out...

AGAIN!!!

Checked mine the other day at the battery, since I was seeing voltage drops while driving...but never experienced any starting issues.

Alternator checked out fine with DVM, while gauge readings were much lower. Even after applying a load with lights, radio, 4-way flashers, heater fan on high and running windows up and down. All good at the DVM while doing so.

Relay though...for the no start issue...would have never guessed...

That is very, very common... so much so that for years I have posted Relay Relay Relay on nearly every no start thread. Thought I no longer needed to

I only made note of that...because the very first post...recommended checking the relay. Which, had he just followed up on that...we would have ended this topic pronto...instead of whatever it was he was doing...lol.

Before I pulled the relays, it was the underhood components that kept the car from nearly starting. I pulled everything out of the fusebox and AFTER replacing the underhood stuff, inadvertently switched two relays. In other words, it wasnt the relay problem at first because I hadnt removed them yet, but after replacing the underhood stuff went and created the relay issue. In the beginning, checking the relays wouldnt have made no difference because other things were preventing starting. The relays were good, just mis-installed. It was my error that gave you all so much to ponder. sorry bout that!
