Default No start - walked home

So I just walked home while my car, a 928S '84 euro, is still two streets away. I want to tow it tomorrow, unless someone has a brilliant tip about what could be wrong

I was driving a couple minutes and the engine stopped while all lights on the dashboard went on. The top center exclamation mark also blinked red.

I tried restarting it and the exclamation mark kept blinking, but stopped blinking after a couple tries. It looked all normal. However, the engine did not start.

The starter motor runs but I cannot hear the fuel pump, even if I put my ear next to it while lying behind the car (with someone else trying to start).

I tried the usual suspects. I wiggled with a turning motion all the fuses and exchanged the relays that had something to do with the fuel pump and the startup sequence. Just to be sure I also exchanged fuse 17 (fuel pump) with a new one. I also reseated the two big computer connectors in fuse box. It didn't help.

Is there a 928 oracle with infinite knowledge who can give me advice oh wise ones?

Jumper the fuel pump relay and see if the pump runs. If it does, try to start it. If it starts, drive home lol and then buy a new relay. If it doesn't, at least you can rule out the fuel pump and the circuit that powers it.

Were you accelerating or decelerating at the time of the incident?

I had a similar occurrence on my previous 1979 US car when it skipped a tooth on the timing belt. It is a non-interference engine so nothing drastic occurred.

Could be lots of things but last time it happened to me it was the fuel pump.

The light up dash while running is indicative of the timing belt breaking. Pull the intake tubes and look through the vent holes while someone turns the motor over.....

Where do you come up with some of your advice? Nothing Porsche put in the warning system indicates that the belt broke, and would be indicated by a flashing light.

/wonders why i emptied my ignore list.

Pull the tubes, and look through the holes on both cam covers, if the belt broke it would be loose on at least one of the cams, also look for belt dust. The ! light is associated with the belt tension warning system.

According to the owner's manual, the central warning light will only blink for the following "Priority 1" conditions:

Brake Fluid - (cannot cause a no-run issue)
Oil Pressure - (could be a culprit)
Oil Level - (also could cause be a culprit)

The manual also says the warning light will flash with the corresponding light. Do you recall which other warning light was flashing?

If the alternator stopped charging then surely the battery would be dead and he would just hear a click from the starter

I get my advice from real world experience. I never said the flashing light was indicating broken belt. You need to take a course in reading for comprehension.

All the indicators are the same as if the belt broke. Flashing light caused by low oil pressure......

Please put me back on ignore. Your life will be better.

There is no belt tension warning on the 16V cars

No. Just the alternator light would come on.

Thank you for thinking along guys! By reading about those belt issues I decided to tow it back home just in case. The 928 is back in my back yard and I will look at it when I have some free time again. Thanks again for thinking along guys, really really helpful! This will definitely put me in the right direction! I have quite a list to find the issue. I love this forum!

Every time my fuel pump power wire wiggled loose and the engine died, all of the dash lights came on. I don't think that's a symptom of anything other than the engine stopping and the ignition switch still being on, which would be true for a snapped belt and plenty of other things.
