Default Oil Pressure sender terminals

Much appreciate if someone can advise me which pins on the oil sender are which. The switch was fitted a couple of years ago and I was under the impression that new cores were fitted through to the 14 pin connector but that was not the case.

However, as I started to work through the wiring harness issues I found that all they had done was splice new wires from the sender into the existing harness two cores of which [Blue/white and Blue/black] have literally fallen to pieces to the point where one cannot tell what the colour is.

On the attached photo three wires [red yellow and blue] have been used. The red one is connected to the red/brown common earth but the other two wires I could not resolve which is the alarm and which is the analogue signal.

Regards

Fred

I just found my old oil sender and suspect I have solved my query. The red cable is connected to terminal M so logic suggests the blue wire is connected to terminal WK which is the oil pressure switch and thus the yellow cable must be connected to terminal G which is the analogue output for oil pressure.

Much appreciate if someone can confirm that is correct.

Does the analogue output vary voltage or does it change resistance with pressure [assuming that is not the same thing].

You will know right away if they are backwards. The light will be on and the oil pressure will read zero when running.

edit: It might be pegged max pressure now that I think about it. But if the low pressure light is on when running then its backwards...

Pin 2 (blue/black) and 4 (blue/white) give the readings, 7 (brown/green) is an oddity for the 3 pin units that is a quasi ground and can be left off if you use an early two connector pressure unit.

How often does the sending unit fail? Is it like a fuel pump...100k and that's about it?

I have read of these units failing so when I had oil pressure indication problems it seemed reasonable to start with the sender uniit. At the time i did not know what a dogs breakfast parts of my engine harness were in. Some 4 cores were in very poor shape and I am currently by passing the loom with a sub harness I am running.

I would not mind betting my sender unit was OK- I will get round to testing it one of these days.

I've that happen with my wiring being as decrepit as it is. I would hate to get them the wrong way round and toast something [not that I think that will happen]!

I have to replace 5 cores of the engine loom. I have removed the crispy fired shrink sleeve back to the front of the engine and the good news is that the remaining wires seem in pretty reasonable condition. I running a separate sub loom I am creating from the oil pressure sender area back to the 14 pin plug. This includes a core from the oil level sender and from the alternator. I'll post some pics of the refurb a little later.
