2nd gear knocking
I have a reasonably loud knocking noise in only second gear.
I haven't done much testing yet as I've concentrated on doing jobs to avoid all out failure. 2 yrs ownership. 6 km driven. It's currently on a trailer awaiting it's safety tomorrow. I took it out on the drive to shine up the brakes and the knocking is distinct. I wish it was a cv joint but doubt.
I have not changed the gearbox oil yet which I was recommended but was hoping to safety and test further, and get her up to proper operating temperatures.
I have not done any clutch or TT work and I'm anxious enough about the test tomorrow but got to ask... any suggestions, what would cause this...?

Usually any noise in 2nd gear with a manual 928 can be attributed to a worn out 2nd gear syncro. Changing the fluid may help but how much depends on how worn out the syncro is.

Drain the gear oil and see what is on the magnets.
Because these are "layshaft design" transmissions, all of the gears turn all the time....so it is rare to have a noise only when an individual gear is engaged.
Points to a chip on second gear which only shows up when the gear is under load.
Not uncommon for the spring under the lockout on the top cover to break...and sometimes these springs will "run" through an individual gear, chipping or damaging it.
There should be some sign of what is going on trapped on the magnets, unless someone else already drained out the "damage".
