2015 Nevada Open Road Challenge ORR
Hi all,
The Nevada Open Road Challenge (NORC) is in two weeks and I was planning to attend with Bill Ball as crew chief. This is an Open Road Race on Nevada highway 318 from Lund to Hiko (90 miles). If all goes well I'll be running in the 170 mph class again. We took a year off to fix a few mechanical issues, and hope we have gotten everything under control.
For this year we've updated our crankcase breather system with some components provided by Greg Brown (thanks Greg). This should lessen the amount of oil that "exits" the engine. Also with SSCC banning methanol, we've had to re-jet our water/methanol injection system to just run water. This may cause us some issues with knocking/retarded ignition timing. At our last dyno session we didn't have to retard the timing any, but we were down on power. I don't expect to be able to match the 210 mph top speed from the 2013 NORC, but should still be able to get the 170 mph average.
Bill and I will be driving up to Ely, Nevada on Thrusday, May 14th. I was wondering if anyone else in the 928 community was going to enter?

Thanks Stan,
Ya, Bill is great. I wouldn't be able to do this without all his help, that's for sure. He's invaluable, and I'm glad to have him as a friend.

Find this very interesting. We do not have anything like open road racing over here.
Do tell us more about the updated crankcase breather system, pictures please.

Good luck George! You and Bill have done a great job in the ORR races over the years, once again surprising many people with how fast 928's can really go.
I don't know if any of your changes to the crank case breather system include items in this earlier thread from Rob about oil pooling in the heads and Greg's work on dry sumping 928 engines, but included it here anyway since it covers a lot of detail in what needs to be addressed: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...8-engines.html
Hope you and Bill have great success out there!

Aren't you a little late for the 2014 event?
Best of luck to you and Bill in 2015!

I'm using modified cam covers similar to the ones in Rob's thread plumbed from the two ports at the top of the oil fill spout. The four "stock" cam cover ports are then routed to catch cans like this:

Looking at the photo reminded me of another mod for this year, we went back to the stock fuel pressure regulator (suggestion from Tim Murphy). We are now just using the Sharktuner to adjust the fuel map and not relying on the adjustable fuel regulator. This plus a rebuilt MAF caused us to spend a lot more time tuning then we expected (and a broken injector wire didn't help either).

Good luck George. I'm back in China for the month as usual. Great that Bill is your partner this time. Hopefully you won't get stuck in Eureka NV eating Chinese food while waiting for the tow truck

Thanks Van,
So how did the Chinese food in Eureka compare to the stuff you get in China?
Take it easy,
