So here are some photos of the remote key head modifications: note the stock Porsche:Huf shaft tops are forked and longer and thicker than this. You need to file them down - then drill a hole in exactly the right place. You can use the blank that comes with the key head, sandwich the 2 together and drill though the hole in the blank as a template blank. Note that the holes in the blanks are bigger than needed - match the screw instead.

You have to arrange it so the other screw goes tight into the "V" notch...

The Huf heads are wider than the slot in the head - I just opened up the head plastic slot with an HD X-Acto knife.

I also show here the flip remotes. The shaft slots into the hinged housing and is retained by 2 small screws that locate into a channel near the end. I think this will be relatively easy to replicate on the Silca Keys when they get here. I think the Huf ends are less well shaped for this adaptation. The key blade will be long relative to the blank and will extend up to approx the top of the ring clip. But the body has a slot all the way to the top - so this should still work out OK. We shall see.

Some measurements:

Porsche-Huf key blade (outside Stock head) 52.5mm(L) x 7.2mm(W) x 4mm(T) - the head end shoulder is 11.1mm wide for ~16.5mm long
Porsche-Huf key blade (outside KE Remote head) 51mm(L) x 7.2mm(W) x 4mm(T) - the head end shoulder is 11.1mm wide for ~15mm long
Generic flip head blade (from KE Hinge socket) 38mm(L) x 8.45mm(W) x 2.7mm(T) - the head end shoulder is 9.75mm wide for ~11mm long

So if the Porsche key is adapted to the same final length as the remote head version it will extend 13mm longer than the generic blade.

This puts it 1mm less than the top of the keyring loop. Still acceptable I think - the slot on the side of the key runs the full length and is open at the end.
I will evaluate if the blade can be shortened further since that will help the looks. The slot is wide enough for all but the head end shoulder.
The slot width is 10.40mm for its whole length. I think an extra 0.65 mm can be shaved off the front (button side) of the slot at the shoulder end to allow the Porsche blade to fit (snug)

Interested and following along. I've been thinking about making a keyhead from some kind of quality wood, make it fit the Porsche 928 key and whatever electronics.

Been following this with interest and have purschased the entry system.
My eyes hurt from looking at the schematics. What is the cleanest install possible at this point?
Will this interfere with the factory locking/release controls?
Should I look to run it series or parallel?
Thanks in advance.

If you all hold on until I complete the install I will give further details. These will be complete ansd explicit for a '91/GTS - since that is what I will install it on.

I understand enough of the configuration of the earlier cars to give a fairly good guide for someone to be the first specific install with extra help. If that could be
someone willing to detail the exact procedure for others (write up and photos) that would be most excellent. There will be 5 basic general versions:

1980 - 1984 - early locks & discrete central lock & alarm & direct drive windows, early CE panel
1985 - 1988 - early locks & discrete central lock & alarm & direct drive windows, late CE panel
1989 - Later locks & discrete central lock & upgraded alarm & direct drive windows, late CE panel
1990 - Later locks & discrete central lock & upgraded alarm & relay drive windows, late CE panel
1991 - 1995 - later locks & combo alarm/central locks/interior lights & relay drive windows, late CE panel

There is still some minor detail variation by year... exact CE panel connections, location & config of alam modules etc.

In general the install is completely in parallel to the central locking and the mechanical locking and the alarm system (if it still works). In other words you can use the key instead of the KE at any time (to lock/unlock), you can use the central locking instead of the KE at any time (to lock/unlock). The alarm still works correctly regardless if you use the key or the KE to change its state.

Well it is quite possible to mate the Silca aftermarket 928 keys from Keys for Classics to the generic flip key remote head - however it is a lot of detailed work and the risk of making the keys useless for all purposes is actually quite high... the Keys are about $50 each by the time you pay for decoding - so thats the biggest expense of the whole project right there. You have to decide if you want to take that risk. The keyhead remote version is less challenging so less likelihood of a total loss, but I do think the original Huf keys are a better bet for that application, extra Huf key blades are of course more expensive still...

I think doing this flip key with the hardened steel Huf keys would be rather more difficult - still possible but much harder work.

Is this the full length key, or short key?

This is a long (alarm) key shortened as much as is possible to retain functionality. As a key I significantly prefer the remote head key - but the flip key is certainly compact, and actually works better than I thought. It sticks out of the dash lock a long way though (straight out - looks a little odd).

I probably spent about 1 hour making it but that involved quite a lot of marking up outlines with a marker and scribes and lots of power filing, calipers and fine tuning by hand. I find gently using a sharp hacksaw to to mark up the "file to" lines helps.. but you have to go slow when you get close.

Big task on my car, find all the mess from two previous alarm installs and remove and/or document.

This is taking me a while because I am extremely busy at work right now and don't have any spare time to work on the car. My intent is to install the more complex version and program it to work with both kinds of keys, then try it out for a while. I may try for a modular install so I can plug in the simpler receiver version also to test that for function as well.

Everything I plan to install/configure is already discussed in this thread. What features are possible varies by year and for later cars: the way you have the windows configured..

For a GTS I expect: lock/arm, unlock/disarm, hatch open/alarm_suspend, turn_signal_flash_confirm, locator, unlock/disarm+all_windows_open, lock/arm+all_windows_close.

This compares to my current version that does: lock/arm, unlock/disarm, hatch open/alarm_suspend, turn_signal_flash_confirm, lock/arm+all_windows_close, optional:Horn confirm (currently disabled).

My current version has 2 relays and 3 large power diodes that aren't needed on the new one, but the new unlock/disarm+all_windows_open feature alone will require the addition of 4 small diodes (~1A/50V).
