Thanks that's a big help, especially note on inner clamp orientation as makes great sense (most force where oil can leak). Luckily I had done everything in rebuild except clamping boot so I can make sure boot correctly oriented tomorrow with inner clamp gap upwards

If I recall the clamp must be clocked right so it does not hit the timing belt cover.

to set the outer clamp orient it so the crimped section is at 11 O clock as viewed from the driver side fender looking at the boot

OK but what is special about the 11 position? Wouldn't any position on "right" side of clock avoid fouling centre cover? I did test fit centre cover and can see 11 is clear, but so is 12-6?

Ah thinking more clearly now - would it foul tensioner arm on other side, so 11 is only clear spot between cover on left and arm on right?

Also on filling the tensioner, the WSM (15-22) says that before installation and inserting washer piston the tensioner should be filled 1/3 full of oil, and piston then pushed in till oil comes out of discharge bore and piston hits stop. This sounds like a nice quick and surefire way of filling and checking exit bleeder is clear. Is it appropriate for my S4 or applies only to earlier tensioner - I'm wondering as it refers to 90W gear oil whereas notes on the newer tensioner refer to "engine oil"?

A bit late, I know, but its also worth pointing out that you can replace the main outer clamp on the tensioner boot with a clamp which has a screw to tighten it, instead of the crimp

edit: a check through my old old receipts shows I got mine from 928intl.

Hi Hilton, thanks and not late at all as have not yet applied the crimp.

I would prefer a screw clamp and had a look in couple of auto shops yesterday but couldn't find anything thin enough to fit in the rubber rib. It's a 53mm clamp.

In an old thread someone did put up the p/ns fro three different clamps Porsche has used on the tensioner. Even the wsm shows a screw clamp! If I had a little more time I would order up the screw version.

So instead of coming home with new clamp I picked up some pliers to do the crimp properly. Now that MrMerlin has advised on inner clamp position and outside crimp position it should be ok to crimp down but I would have preferred a reusable clamp.
