5-speed transmission and super bearings for sale
UPDATE: SOLD
I'm selling my 5-speed transmission, 28/11 and numerous new associated parts as listed below. It was originally supposed to go into my project but I changed directions and I am going with a 6-speed conversion, hence the sale.
Some history of the transmission: it was removed from my '86.5 928S, it has 114K miles and is a very smooth shifting transmission. When I first purchased the car in 2001 it was a little rough getting in reverse, but once I replaced the double clutch and aligned it correctly, the reverse issue disappeared. All gears have shifted smoothly without difficulty ever since. During my ownership (10 years) I had the fluid changed every 10K miles (every other oil change). Perhaps overkill, but oil is cheap and these transmissions are expensive to repair.
I am fairly certain it has never been opened up before, when I opened it to take some pictures, the rear paper gasket basically fell apart, and it looks like the original, stock gasket. All drain plugs are in perfect condition, currently only hand tightened. Transmission had no leaks anywhere, however it did get "sprayed" by engine oil due to a leaking oil pan gasket, and some engine oil can be seen on the underside of the transmission. I have tried to clean it up as well as I can while on the stand.
In addition to the transmission, the following parts are included:
- New Constantine (Black Sea R&D) super bearings, never used. Sells for $580 new
- New clutch master cylinder
- 928 Specialist short throw shifter (excellent upgrade, shortens the stock throw)
- New clutch assist spring 928.423.357.04
- New guide rod 928.423.349.01
- New plastic knife-edge bearing 928.423.351.00
- New shift-link coupler 928.424.029.00
- New shift-coupler pin 928.424.229.00
- New Front bearing bracket 928.424.017.05
- Torque tube (has old bearings and shaft), but shaft stuck while I tried to remove the old bearings, and I would not reuse it. Recommend a Greg Brown torque tube shaft for peace of mind.
While it does not have option 220 (LSD), now would be a great time to install one if so desired.
I am asking $2,500 plus shipping (roughly $120-$150) last time I checked with Estes.
Cheers!
Carl

Someone should buy this 5spd and put it in Mark Anderson's Granite Green S4 to make a creative pseudo-GT. All it would take is Rob Edwards' restoration skills, Doc Mirror's engine bottom end repair and ...

Replacing the twin clutch and aligning it properly was one of the first things I did to it after I purchased it...learned the hard way from my first 928 (which was a 1980 928 5-speed) that clutch/intermediate plate alignment is critical.
I agree, the quality of the feel was greatly improved on the Borg/Warner syncros compared to the early boxes. Add the short(er) shifter and it is a great 5-speed.
Cheers!

I did pay attention....the previous owner didn't.

i made my own short shifter by chopping down the gear shift lever height. because the pivot spacing was so different than the S4, it really made it a short shifter by shorting the lever. Plus, it sure felt a lot better shorter in height.. (84S conversion to 85 transmission and chop shifter lever height)
I still wonder how that drive train is doing in Rich's car in AZ... anyone know??
