86.5 Intake / Engine Harness / Timing Belt
Well here we go. On stands, hood and cross brace off, ready for disassembly, cleaning, inventory and parts list for Roger.
Some history here.
Just now getting back to it. Came to the conclusion that engine harness is shot. Chased my tail to no end on ever changing electrical issues. Last pic shows examples of cracking harness.
I’ll start with intake then evaluate harness accessibility and decide if timing belt will be concurrent or follow separately.
Don’t know best stand height but I’m sure I’ll need to go under so this is lowest that will accommodate that.
More to come.

I have some connector boots that are cracking like that. Does that really mean an entire harness is needed? Is there no way just to replace the connectors and boots?

You may be able to replace connectors and be fine but it really depends on the condition of your harness.
I started replacing connectors but every time I touched something else, there was another problem. Then I scored a smoking deal on a new harness on ebay so here we are.

good luck on your restoration,
on my 86, 5 speed it had lots of new parts and it still wouldn't run.
Last thing was to swap in a good condition engine harness.
I did this in a parking lot out in LA it took 5 hours,
once all of it was hooked up hit the key and she fired right up ,
drove it back to Denver likity split,
only issue was a leaking oil fill tube so that made a mess.

That may even solve the problem for a little while.
The downside of doing that is that you are addressing symptoms, not the real problem.
And the real problem is that the entire harness is 30 years (or so) old, and has been living in a "rather unfriendly" environment for that time.
If the connectors & boots are cracking, then the insulation on all the wires probably isn't too far behind.
The general procedure seems to be to fix individual spots until the frustration gets to be too much, replace the entire harness, and then say "I should have done that a long time ago."

Denny - store that fan upright - all the viscous fluid will leak out otherwise!
BTW, those cam gears look perfect.

The gear condition was a pleasant surprise. I have no idea how many miles are on the belt but I know it's been on there more than ten years. I'm sure most will suggest to change it due to age alone. Of more concern than the belt are the WP, idler, and tensioner so I'll likely be going in there too. Comments anyone?

I would not pull out those cam gears. No need to.

Wire colors are not same but size and function are.

Piece of Cake!
Funny how one thing leads to another on these cars.
What are options for getting these "tested and tuned"?
Success, old fuel harness is out!
Here's the new but its not in yet.
Are there fuel lines in there that need to be change?
They all appear to be metal. Where do Greg's go on this car?
Stay tuned. There's much more to come and I'm sure I'll need lot's of advice.
Thanks for the feedback guys,
Denny
