A word of caution: I just did a TB job on my GTS in October 2014 just before Third Coast. I knew the WP was a Porsche WP since the car had been serviced since new at the same LA Porsche dealership by the PO. The TB and WP had been done about a year before I got the car. I checked the WP when I was doing the TB. It had no shaft play whatsoever and spun well by hand. I decided that since it was a Porsche pump, I would leave it be this time around.

In the preceding months, I had just completed TB jobs on the Stepson and on my '89. I replaced WPs on both those cars. On the GTS, I decided to leave it this time around.

The car performed flawlessly during the Third Coast event.

A month later....you know where this is going, right?....I start the GTS and a flood of water erupts from behind the pulley on the WP. The freaking seal on the WP has unsealed itself.

One of my pet peeves is doing a job over. Since the TB job was so new, it felt like a do over. I hate that, and I hate that I didn't change that freaking WP when I did the TB job the first time. That will not happen again.

Long story short: Don't be a hater. Change out the WP, do the job one time only and feel good about it.

the gears are fine... dont go mental on replacing everything.. i would say if the pump was in there and not leaking, leave it in , but if the bearing is loose replace the pump. sometimes its more risky to change. If its original.. sure , change it out.
the tensioner.... yes, advice given there
the tool.. .yes, too tight. usually on the light side of the window is the real setting. 1/4 into the window is 5.0 on the porsche tool.
the antifreeze is what dropped down from the pump when changing , but there is a lot of oil around. usually the main seal leak would look different. i would leave the oil pump alone as well.
you DONT need new bolts on the water pump ,... that is plain silly. the holes that they screw into are the weak link . just make sure they are clean.

The reason I question the gears is that:

The crank gear has a weird texture on the teeth and they “look wider” in the middle. Putting a straight edge parallel across them does allow light through but not a feeler gauge so they are not “cupped”. And the gear is steel so it will be fine, right?

The oil pump gear appears to have a coating of some type that is wearing through. But the gear is steel so it will be fine, right?

One cam gear is starting to wear through coating. Will it last through one more belt change cycle?

The crank and oil pump seals have been previously replaced and appear to not be leaking. The cam seals were likely not replaced. Can they be inspected for leakage with the sprockets in place? I assume if I take the cam gears off, a tool is required to time them during reassembly. Is this correct?

The water pump looks new and feels tight. I am tempted to reuse it even though it has a metal impeller.

The water pump bolts are fine.

Correction to last post. Crank gear is cupped. I can get .003"+ feeler gauge in there. It will get replaced as will at least one cam gear.

Will a Roger cam gear play nicely with the good one that's on there or should I replace both?

Default Front Engine Harness

Some time ago I bought a used front engine harness but it turned out to be not much better then my original. The original wires looked good but the sleeve is cracked so I "patched" it. I considered self vulcanizing rubber tape but wondered how it would hold up to the environment so I used a gas and oil resistant heavy duty "vinyl" tape instead.

What are options for this harness and what have others done?

And yes, all the cam seals will be replaced too.

Default Cam Gears

Will the top gear last through one more belt?
I've read they wear quickly once exposed.

Yes they do wear quickly once exposed. You don't want that one gear to be the weak link in all the great work that you are doing. Either recoat the gear now or install a new gear and use this gear for a spare later.

^Yea, I know you're right, I'm just on the edge of that money pit and not sure I'm ready for the fall. But I guess it's too late, there is no way out. So, I might as well look the other way and keep going.

How much is it to re-coat the gear? It doesn't appear to be very worn underneath the coating yet.

Words to live by: Do not ever total receipts for a 928. And do not ever show receipts for 928 parts or work to a SO.

This cam gear is perfect for re-coating.

Sent mine last year to http://finishlinecoatings.com/

They did a perfect job.

If I remember well, around 100$ for both.

If you decide to buy a new one, I would take this one anytime.

Unbelievably slow going when you've only got a couple hours here and there.

Believe me I know well too much. My very first TB, WP and tensioner, took me over 30 hours spread out between April and May. Don't despair.
