Default Your most hated job/task/repair on the 928

I just took the twin fan asm out, and put it back in three times today.

That thing really, really annoys me. I'm all scratched to heck from the metal clips, and drooled trans fluid on the left side, and cracked one of the mounting tabs. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

What say you?

Ya know, I think the level of irritation in a maintenance action comes from the anticipated or perceived level of difficulty versus the reality of the job.
For instance, if ya gotta pull that front strut with the stock spring setup, you look in there and say to yourself..."should be about 14 minutes start to finish".
2 hours later, when you've had to disassemble the entire car to get that damned strut out it seems like the stupidest job ya have ever done. Perception vs, reality.
Conversely, when ya look in the engine bay and say to yourself, "holy crap... it's gonna be three days to get that engine outta there"...and 12 hours later you're having a beer & watching it hang from the cherry picker you say to yourself ..."that was pretty easy".

No, for me as long as I'm mentally prepared for the job, there's not to much that can **** me off (I work on Jets after all), but it's the broken bolt that turns a 30 minute job into a 3 hour job, or the shoddy work by the PO that results in about ten "while you're at it" steps. "I was only here to replace a light bulb but the socket was corroded and the bulb broke while trying to twist it out, and the lens screw stripped in the plastic, and the seal around the lamp fixture turned to powder as soon as I removed the lens...".

That kinda stuff really makes the veins on my forehead bulge!!

So...I haven't found too many things that are all that stupid on the 928, but to me even small crap like changing the ignition switch...which should be easy (in my mind) were it not for the fact that they put in those stupid screws like they did...can be a huge pain in the ***!

I'd say there really isn't that much that sucks if you have the right tools, a lift and a good frame of mind. I took the rear bumper cover off today and started sanding to prepare for the new paint.
If I didn't have the right tools, getting the bolts for the rear bumper cover off would have been damn near impossible short of removing the PSD pump and those associated steps.
The rights tools make a "hard" job easy.

Rebuilding/ replacing the HVAC system. Never have I had to take apart an entire interior and fiddle with pressure lines quite like the AC lines in my 81.

It's slow time consuming and when all is said and done you are out over $1000 in parts. Plus all the cuts received from sharp edges on the quick clips for interior components.

Replacing the door handle is somewhere up there!

I've done 3 during my 928 ownership so far.

My vote for the door handle as well. I've done both doors so I'm good for 20 more years

It a right of passage to 928 ownership!

The full AC debug took a day, but it was just produral stuff, no ah-crap moments.

So far there haven't been any impossible tasks. With all but a couple exceptions, everything has been planned/scheduled work. I look at a task, decide how long it should take. Then multiply by at least four for the WYAIT stuff. Sometimes it takes longer.

The least pleasant project so far has been motor mounts and sump gasket, mostly because what looked like a clean undercarriage was really a stockpile of dirty little secrets. So it was a slimy mess. I learned, plus now with the lift it will be a whole lot easier if I have go go back in again.

Let me go on record with the blue hose. And then upon successful placement of said hose, one has the joy of bleeding the system.
If I ever have to do it again I'm going to buy an automatic or cut a hole in my fender.

I had this in mind before I even opened the thread, and I have two 5 speeds so only one set of oil cooler lines to deal with. I must admit to have removed all the metal clips and replaced then with cable ties aligned so that the sharp end left when you cut off the excess faces the radiator - so no more scratches.

Yep, blue hose for me too.

Much swearing and frustration last time I did it.

Next time I might try dropping the clutch master cylinder out of the car to attach that end of the hose, it might be faster. (note: RHD cars)
