Did you get the 928 you wanted, or settle for what you thought was right at the time?
Thinking about this and reading some of the posts, did you buy the 928 you were after, or settle for what was conveniently available at the time, etc.?
What were your experiences ??

2 out of the 3 are what I wanted.
I cannot really complain about the odd ball since it's what my father wanted in 1991 and I ended up buying it from him.

I bought the first 928 I could see, and then found out it was a particularly rare bird. It is the simplest and has the least amount of things to go wrong being an 81 without a sunroof and with auto climate.
I then later found out it didn't have rub strips from the factory and am in the process of reversing them with new fenders and doors as they are damaged from PO's .
So, I unintentionally got the one I wanted event though it was a $1,000 project intended as my first car.
It's been a great learning experience so far and I hope to get more 928's soon as they are starting to go up and good projects are getting hard to find .

It wasn't exactly what I wanted. I wanted a project and had my mind set on a '85. After months of searching and only finding one 85 within 300 miles, with a bad tranny, I got a bit impatient. I found an '80 in my "backyard." It is definitely a project. The interior has left a lot to be desired, but I spent $4k less then my budget. I really like the simplicity that the earlier model, and the engine is a work of art.

I drove a brand new '82 five speed, in 1982, and always wanted one since that time. A business colleague had just taken delivery of a Guards Red 5 speed, and asked me if I wanted to take it for a drive. I of course said yes, and fully expected that he would be in the passenger seat ... but he said I could just take it for a drive! I said I'd take it for a drive around the block, but he insisted I take it for a long drive up some mountain roads and tell him what I thought of it. I returned one and a half hours later, with a smile on my face, wisps of smoke coming from the brakes, and that ticking sound of hot metal cooling. I was hooked.
Five years ago I saw my current '82 5 speed and just had to have it. It was an emotional buy, with my heart ruling my head, and I let myself in for a lot of deferred maintenance ... but the memories came flooding back the first time I drove it on twisty mountain roads, just as I'd done decades before.
When the GTS came up, I realised the opportunity to own such rare car would never come up again, so I flew to Melbourne and spent three hours going over every inch of the car, and then had a PPI to make sure I hadn't missed anything. What a beautiful car .... I'm working on getting it into perfect condition right now.

It took me 3, but got the one I dreamed of. I may have more at some point, but I'll still have this one!

I didn't know it was the one I wanted until after I bought it (sight unseen) and flew to pick it up. I felt blessed that day, and the next, and the next...

I actually got more than I expected. Looked for over a year for an S4 5-speed. Was VERY tempted a few times to give up and settle for an automatic. Found my car at the local dealership of all places. Saw it the day they put it on the lot and only knew at the time it was an 87 or newer 5-speed. Didn't take long to figure out that a 90 5-speed was a GT!
Really wanted a black car, but red is actually my favorite color, so I guess you could say I settled on color, but I love it now.

Back in '94 I spent about 6 months looking for a '86.5 manual. Eventually a '82 5 spd with the "competion package" and 43k miles popped up in the local paper. Took it for a test drive and thought "I can live with this." 21 years later I've still got it.
About four years ago I added a '89 S4 5 spd with sport suspension and limited slip - so, 1 of 41 so equiped. Happy camper here....

I really wanted a car with Pasha interior. It was my dreamcar since 1978. I found this good driving example in Oak green. Looking back I think I had better buy an S or S2 because if the extra hp. Or anither colour becayse it seens that there are too much of tgese cars in this colour. And now I prefer a light shade. At the time I was impressed with the performance of every 928 I drove. I could not imagine the amount of work involved in making it really good.

After spending a lot of time in the shadows reading and studying the information on this site I decided on the 87 S-4. I really wanted an early 78-80 model but the 87 seemed to be the culmination of everything Porsche had learned and I wanted a car I could go "cross country" in style and comfort with the extra power.
11 months and 12 cars later, I had almost pulled the trigger on 3 but my gut said no. Finally found the "one" right in my own backyard that met ALL the criteria you guys listed for buying a used 928.
Two years later and I still get a rush just looking at it...

Like a few have said, I got what I could find only to find out how much I got.
The only thing that was non-negotiable was a 5 speed.
I prefer the look of the earlier cars, but not to the point of refusing a good deal on an S4 or later.
GTS money is out of my league, as are any seriously "low mile" cars.
Found mine, looked it over (mostly) and bought it. Pretty good service records from PO, nothing before him though.
Mechanically solid, but lots of little stuff, body in fair/poor shape. Lots of scratches & dings. Interior is is nice to very nice shape, other than the cracked dash.
Turns out to be an 85 Euro S2. I knew it was a Euro, but not how special that made it.
Federalization was done fairly well, with genuine Porsche corner markers and it still had the H4s.
It's Mossgreen, which turns out to be rare too. Not the color I would have chosen, but it's grown on me nicely. A lot of people have commented on the color. More women than men. Guys like the car, ladies like the color.
I'm happy with what I got, and right now it would take well over double what I paid for it (probably double what it's actually worth) to get it out of my hands.
