Was originally looking at a 911 Turbo, but after driving a couple of nice examples of the era was really starting to wonder what the hoopla was all about as it was about as crude as a tractor.
Having listened to my b!tch!ng about having to be a contortionist in order to drive the thing sitting sidewas because of the offset pedals protruding from the floor way too far off to the right, non-adjustable steering wheel 2" away from the dash and the spindly, finnicky gear lever also coming out of the floor and how it all reminded me way too much of my dad's crappy old Fiat 600, the owner of the small, P-car-only dealer / service shop knowingly smiled, took me around the back and gave me the keys to an '89 GT. It was the longest test drive in history and the easiest sale he'd ever made.

IMO the '89 - 91 GT's are the best-priced 'bang for your buck 928's available in the US market today. Because relatively few were imported to the US (fewer even than the total GTS run sold here), which I believe is generally not reflected in market place values. True, it was not stroked for the additional 20 HP the GTS enjoyed, but just sayin' for what it's worth...

I knew very little about the 928 before my purchase. By the time I got home (a 1200 mile road trip) I was fired up! Best car I've ever owned and its my Daily Drive. How cool is that!

You mean your supposed to know something about 928's before you buy one other than you like them? Where's the fun in that!
Bought mine without a PPI or any real knowledge. Quickly learned I needed to spend quite a bit on deferred maintenance. One thing that I have learned is that I really do enjoy driving it much more than the 911

I had been admiring 928s for some time and wanted to move up to Porsche's top of the line car. My car was being auctioned on EBay and, I thought, wasn't getting the attention it deserved ... so I said to myself "if no one will buy it at this price, then I will". And I did!
In retrospect I could have spent more for a fresher, lower-miles car but the GTS has been very enjoyable and runs really well for 150k miles.

I always like the look of 928…but really knew very little about the car in general. I have been a long-time owner of a 1971 911T Targa which I had just finished an extensive restoration around, so I was ready for a new project. I was at a conference when another delegate asked me if I was interested in his 928 S that had been sitting in his garage for 4 years (yes, 928S). The previous owner had passed away and left him the car in his will…which he could not drive because it was a standard…After a little research and looking closer at the crappy pictures of the car he sent me, I told him I was interested. Not knowing for sure the car was anything other than a non-runner that needed work (read, should have had a PPI, but I knew it was going to be a project anyway) Once on site and seeing the car for the first time and locating the tell tail codes that make the car what it really was, we made a deal and I towed it away. The 89GT (166,000km) was all there and all-in-all good shape…But as you can imagine it had a LOT of deferred maintenance. Before I bought it I told my wife I was going to fix it and flip it…I’m glad to say it’s all done. That said, I didn't tell her when I was going to flip it…so it could be awhile. I love driving the 928 more than the 911. I think she is happy to get the 911 all to herself.
P.S I don’t think I could have done it without all the information and feedback I have received from the people on this site. So thank you all for the help along the way!!
So…I got the best 928 the first time around…and really didn’t even know it, at the time.

The 81 was bought 24 years ago , It was what I could afford . My practice wife never liked it , I still have the car
The 91GT is the car I wanted color everything . Thought about a GTS but decided there was too many issues with the motors , but love the rear fenders / brakes /mirrors

Being a Porsche person since 1981, first with a 914, and then a slew of 911's, afterwards. In 1983 while living in Minnesota for a year, admiring my wealthy aunt's brand new 928s sitting in the garage, she threw me the keys and told to take it for a ride to get some milk and bread at the local grocery store, in January, with ice and snow on the ground! -found she bought a new one every 2 years!. I was so impressed with it!, from that day on, I told myself someday I would have one for my self.
Fast forward to 2012, now living in North Carolina, I'm visiting a friend, who owns a European car repair shop, and next door is a Nissan/Infiniti shop, the owner Steve owns a 1985 US 5spd 928 Grand Prix White/Navy interior. I know this car because I almost bought it from him back in 1994, but now he is asking a lot less for it. It needs some cosmetics, mostly interior work, but mechanically is very good having a recent clutch, new radiator and timing belt. I had always wanted a 5spd version, this one with LSD option. I also always liked white on 928s, due to the fact that the old Holbert car was painted white and used for the IMSA medical emergency vehicle in the late '80s and early 90's, and when I worked the Miami Grand Prix as a corner worker would see it out on the track and loved it.
After attending a few SITM's, and have now caught the 928 bug pretty bad. I now have 2, the other another 1985 but a 5spd Euro!

I bought mine so that it didn't go to a wrecker.
I doubt that it would have knowing Stan but I was the first one to make room for it.
I should have bought a 964 AWD ragtop that I was looking at in 2000, I would likely still have it. That's the fish that got away

Black on Black 1989 928 GT with less than 10k on the clock. Prezackly what I wanted. That was in May of 1992, and she is still the princess of the harem.

I wanted a 928 and bought an 84. Then I wanted more and bought the GTS. Now I want a 78 stock in silver as I can’t think of a more timeless classic. So I guess I’m in the "not quite what I want" group. Me and Steve Earl... I ain't never satisfied.
