Default Need advice on 1988 928 S4 pricing

Hi everyone, thanks in advance to any recommendations and suggestions. Looking at a 1988 928S4 for sale with the following specs:
"perfect smog and registration paid until June 2015 recent maintenance work in the last month: fuel pump MAF rebuilt by injection labs Rebuilt ECU\LH by JDS porsche Rebuilt fuel injectors Full tune (spark plugs, oil and filter, Mobile One) past maintenance: timing belt, water pump at 61000 miles complete steering rack replacement (a known issue with these cars) complete ignition system overhaul vacuum hose overhaul Full set of Porsche factory manuals, very well maintained maintenance records, factory car cover, factory bra, brand new Lloyd car mats. only upgrades from stock, twin tip exhausts (sounds incredible), turbo twist wheels p-zero tires, momo steering wheel and new radio headunit (stock steering and radio included)"

What's a fair price for this car, if condition 3 or 4?
Any specific 928 S4 things I should ask of the seller regarding its maintenace or replacements (suspensions, ball joints, etc) besides the usual stuff like bodywork, accidents, paint, etc?

Thank you

SIMPLE:
seek a ppi along with as much of a full disclosure as you can get at least.
I think there's seldom liklihood of a perfect car anywhere.
COMPLEX:
Pay whatever price you and the seller can agree upon
HOPEFULLY:
you can then go out and drive it like you stole it
GENERALLY:
Don't ask someone rash (like me) to test drive it
Best wishes

Ad says TB/WP was done at 61k, how long ago (time) was that?

It's an auto, when and what was last flex plate/crank end play check (details on that in the "New Visitor" sticky)?

It mentions ignition, vacuum lines and injectors; have the engine bay fuel lines been done?
Those are pushing 30 years old, are a serious fire hazard if old, and aren't cheap to replace properly.

Edit because the ad had details that answered questions.

Depends upon condition (including all cosmetics), specification (auto or manual, current mileage) and how well looked after it has been. What was replaced when the timing belt was done, and how many years and miles ago was it? Is the bodywork all original? How good is the paint and interior? Lots of variables.

What you've said sounds promising, but a thorough PPI, by someone who knows their way around a 928, is essential. Parts can be very expensive, as is bodywork and interior work. Good luck!

Ballpark figures (assuming 75k miles now) could be anywhere from $5k to $17k for an auto, and a little more for a manual, IMO.

Thank you all for your help! Will compile a list of questions for the seller. Will keep posted if any news come about.

The maintenance history sounds promising from the description and given the size of the history file shown in the photos. However it skirts around some issues like timing belt age, whether the intake has been off for replacement of gaskets/sensors, whether the suspension and brakes have been overhauled etc.

I'm guessing from the work done recently, the seller bought it as a non-runner, and went through the fuel pump, MAF and LH replacement to make it run.

The interior/exterior look good, so assuming no damage and that the paint is original, IMO its a $14-18k car depending on results of a PPI and how extensive prior work has been on replacing old rubber/plastic in the engine bay.

I'm surprised it didn't meet reserve at $15k in the ebay auction.

Mine was on Ebay a couple of weeks ago and the auction went up to 15,000$

The market is not easy to understand and the demand for a 928 is not very strong....but it should be better this spring.

I'm not familiar with the car or owner. Looks nice. Hi Tec Auto in San Rafael would be a local source for a PPI. Most likely the service was done there. http://hitecauto.us/

Thanks for all the replies. The seller never replied to my request for more info, and I think the ad must have been an error, or possibly a feeler to see how much interests he/she gathers before selling it.

Mike B, that is precisely the car that I saw advertising on "Carsforsale.com" for $7,000! Typo for sure!

I would seriously consider this one from Stan. He knows these 928s better than most and he's pretty close to you.

Stan, you can send me the "recommendation fee" by check or cash when he buys it...
