Check for a dead coil as I am sure that pre 1990 cars without the safety relay don't have a "limp home mode".

Personally I would replace all caps, rotors, wires, plugs, and coils just to be sure everything is working correctly and is fresh so nothing is left to question.

Welcome to the Shark Tank and the world of 928 ownership Bryce.
I really like the way you have not hesitated to jump right into things.
It looks like you've found a nice one in relatively well kept condition.
How is the interior..? Is it an automatic or a manual..?
We have a grandfather that used to live in Prescott.
That's a really beautiful part of the country.
Congratulations on your new baby!

Seriously? Most look worn and authentic all by themselves.

Thanks for the idea about coils. Ill check them, the two boxes that fire them, plug wires are new but perhaps routed wrong. Im suspecious of the fuel pump. Auto store had a universal delphi and 3 filters in stock. I put it on, seemed loud, but jumping the pump and pulling a hose show good flow. Im taking it back and getting a bosche. I cant believe I still haven't learned patience(which is what i told myself this project a about).
Had to scuff the bread boxes has they looked too new. Like bright red lip stick i just couldn't get past it.
"She's Back"(good a name as any i suppose) is an auto with very good interior. A small rip on drivers chair and the dash is starting to roll at edges.
thanks again for encouraging words. Ill post again after pump change. Took her out yesturday after fixing what a had done incorrectly, but still wouldn't go above 2k under load.
Changing plugs today.

"BK" is a common colloquial acronym for "bankrupt". Just sayin'...

Congrats on your find and for jumping right in. There's a lot that says the car has been well taken care of too.

My car came with an inch and half of dealer service invoices when I picked it up at 22k. I considered that a Good Thing at the time. In the first year of ownership, I correlated a lot of the work the dealers had done with work I had (re)done, particularly the long dealer history of AC repairs and services. So spend som time categorizing the work already done, so you have at least an idea where the car has had previous problems.

Last but not least, you'll quickly learn that the group here, along with your workshop manuals and our great dedicated parts vendors, are the keys to 928 happy ownership. I can't imagine trying to learn the particulars of these cars without all the knowledge and support. Consider spending the relatively few dollars on Rennlist membership, and get beyond the advertising popups among other things. The cost/benefit is off the charts.

they have a "limp to where the fire will happen " mode.....and the safety relay ignition monitoring circuit is really NOT A LIMP home mode on the later cars but more of a way to break the driveshaft if you insist on driving it...
the only thing that approaches "limp home mode" is the mass air sensor failure where the car will usually run at idle long enough to get you off the railroad tracks or out of the fast lane .

"Shes Bankrupt" thats funny irony to me. Im not yet anyway so ill be dropping the $15 today on a membership.
Woke up at 2am to an "ah ha" moment when it occurred to me my new spark wires did not have any sleeve insulators on them! Must have been shorting out everwhere. Spent the morning resolving that.
Fuel pump, filters, tank strainer, k&n, relays, and a few plastic pieces should be here today from 928int. Hopefully that will do it. Tripple checking vacuum lines over morning coffee currently.

9.5mm cloth inpregnated with rubber

To check for ignition leaks, remove the intake tubes, close the garage door, turn out the lights and get it very dark in the garage(or more safe to wait for dark night), then start the car and look for dancing electric around the wires. Turn the car off quickly if it's in a closed garage. Ignition wire leaks are quite easy to spot in a very dark enviro. I doubt that's the issue unless the wires are really old. Sounds like MAF to me.

Bryce, that car looks great! A heck of a find. And it looks like you are doing a very good job on her, judging from what you have already accomplished. But in the list above, there is one important thing I don't see, which is fuel lines. They are shot, if they are original, no matter what they look like. When you replace them, you will see how brittle they are - the appearance of the exterior counts not one whit. Many posts here on the topic, some of which you have likely read already.

Beautiful car. Nice find and nice save. If you hand polish it every night while whispering sweet things into the side view mirrors you will have the west coast equivalent of Rick's car.

Another vote for replacing the fuel lines as soon as you can. Too many nice 928's have been lost to fires from rotten fuel lines.

I don't know about others, but I would love to see pictures of your Elky. That model year is my favorite and still on my wish list.

Welcome and consider becoming a member and joining the owner's club. Both were great investments for me. The accumulated knowledge in this forum is staggering.

Great looking car, and yes "Patience" and WYAIT are your best friends. I took 13 months prepping my 87 before taking her out. Have had almost two years of problem free driving, which includes several + 1000 miles trips.

Very similar pre-purchase history as well.

Enjoy the ride, congrats on your beautiful ride.

Got back to work after parts arrived Sat. Pump, Strainer, filter, kn filter and a few small parts. Promptly broke plastic air fliter top. Used plastic weld to mend. Suffered my first two blood sheds on pump? My gosh! Cleaned maf with cbc. We will see if that helps.
Fuel lines do need replacing. I called 928int who has been wonderful, and called 928rus for them. Its seems like another $600 to get appropriate hoses. Fine by me, but others need appliances around here too. I didn't find any other viable options not using clamps which seems to be the issue? Clamps on barbs?
Here are some more photos.
