Default A Rack is not a Country but a Part on My Car

And it's leaking at the driver side tie rod boot. Time for a new steering rack.

Who rebuilds these, or do I have to drop $1,300 for a new one?

Core Charge is?

Also, if I remove the rack and change it, do I need to have the car realigned?

the core is $100.
The alignment should be super close as long as you don't disturb the adjusted tie rod length

Andy--

Look super carefully at the tie rods and ends. If you have more than ~~75k on yours, they are due to be replaced along with the rack. Tie rods and lower balljoints are normal wear/replacement consumables.

You will almost undoubtedly need a good alignment regardless. Yes, it's possible to get the tie rods loose from the rack OK, but getting the boots fitted requires the tie rod rods and ends to be separated. Yes, it's possible to put them back exactly as they were before. Yes, it's possble the rack mounting bushings will put the rack back at exactly the same position as the old one. You get the idea. Grab the copper banjo seals for the PS lines, new lines if you need to solve leaks. Good time to replace the PS filter/reservoir too, flush everything so no old system/rack junk passes into your new rack. Slippery slope with several important WYAIT tasks.

I found a new set of tie rods in my garage and will actually be doing those too in addition to an alignment. I have noticed one of the lines is leaking at a fitting with a copper washer and banjo bolt. I have decided to replace every copper washer in the power steering system for additional piece of mind.

I am getting laid off in March so the rack will have to wait until I get back on my feet.

On a side note do rebuilt racks come with new bushings??

Isn't that hard to get out of the PS system?

I've never had to disassemble the tie rods to install boots. Turn the tie rods out of the rack's steering arms and the old boots will pull off. New boots require some Astroglide (or similar) and a tool of some sort to help you stretch them over the inner joint. I use a blunt-ended cotter pin remover for that.

Good to know! I've never done it that way.

Buy your rack from Mark or Roger. DO NOT get one from Pelican or a cheap place on eBay.

The first one I bought was from a non good guy vender and the mounting tabs were clocked about 45 degrees off.

Needless to say, it wouldn't work. I got all my money back, but it put quite a delay into getting the car up and running.

Trying to save a couple of bucks on 928 parts isn't worth the aggravation.

Andy-- Try a bottle of Lucas PS system sealer. It works for many leaks. You will be flushing the system when you finally replace the rack, so no serious worries about "contamination" from the sealer now. Might be the stop-gap (sorry...) for your leaks until things stabilize more.

I'm going to add Lucas PS stop leak for now but which container should I buy? 12 oz or a quart for our power steering systems?

On a side note, I checked my tie rods today and there is no play. Is it even worth installing my brand new yet old stock ones in the car? They ain't broke yet.

Happy New Year everyone!
