A 928 can be reliable. It will always be maintenance intensive.
The trick is to spend the money, spend the time, take care of the maintenance to make it reliable. The drive the wheels off of it.
That has been my plan for my 928. Of course, I am $25,000 into a $5,000 928, so draw your own conclusions...

Start with a system required to make it run. Frex; tming belt and water pump. Do that one, and revel in the success. Then work em off by turns. Take a large job down into several small segments.

I made some progress today. I received all the parts this past week, except the late model hydraulic tensioner kit is currently on back order so I have to wait at least another week. I took time to clean the engine today by spraying down with degreaser and then pressure washing multiple times. I covered up all the sensitive parts so no worries about damaging the engine.
Following the initial clean I started to remove all the stuff from the engine for additional cleaning.
Don't let the next picture fool you, this is my 16yo posing for a picture so she didn't actually perform any cleaning. However, I made her watch as I did the work and she was a good helper handing me tools.
On Monday I'll get some Nissan Bond so I can start removing the valve covers and then start putting everything back together again. Everything went smooth expect for a bolt on the water pump that snapped when removing, but I was able to remove no problem.

I thought I would provide an update. Unfortunately, I have been travelling so much that I only get a chance to touch the car on the weekends. I pretty much replaced all gaskets and o-rings short of taking off the heads. I fully rebuilt the cam towers, which was not too bad. However, I had ~9hrs in cleaning the head surface to removed the old gasket. I can tell you gasket remover does nothing so I recommend purchasing a case of 100 razors and a good scrapper tool and just change razors every few minutes. Once the gasket was removed I used a 2" fine buffing pad on an angle grinder (low speed) and carefully cleaned the surface. I finished by hand using a green scotch brite pad soaked in acetone.
Installed the new hydraulic tensioner, plugs, silicone oil pan seal, etc. to put it all back together again. My wife was not too happy that i washed the oil pan in the dishwasher I can tell you it works like a champ!
Enough with the rambling so here are some pics. I have to order a new TB o-ring as well as the air flow meter o-ring before going any further. I will likely pressure wash the engine bay tomorrow and install the new rack bushing and engine mounts. BTW, most of my time is spent cleaning the engine before putting back together.

Not much of an update, but definitely progress. I was able to pressure wash the engine compartment last week as well as install the new steering rack boots. Today, I was able to install the new engine mounts as well as removal of the steering rack bushings and install the new delrin bushings. Unfortunately, the remaining parts I ordered from Roger did not arrive because one of the o-rings was on back order. I should be able to get the engine finished and hopefully installed next weekend.

Valve is on order from Roger and should arrive later this week. I have installed the engine in the car and I am in the process of putting back together. Got the crank bolt torqued to 217 ft/lbs as well as hooked up the AC lines with new seals. AC compressor used to be black as it was covered in oil so after a 30 min cleaning on the parts washer it is apparently made of aluminum.
Anyway, should have the engine wrapped up this weekend and I will replace the transmission fluid with filter tomorrow. I went ahead and ordered the K1 spring update so that will also be installed.

FWIW on the AC compressor what i have found is that if it gets soaked in parts cleaner this will compromise the O ring seals,
this will be a factor when you charge the system,
it will probably begin leaking oil ,
thats OK just use it till the gas runs out,
then add some more oil and recharge
NOTE I have also been swapping out the manifold O rings and the schrader valves on each manifold,
sometimes the valves are loose this means a leak

My first 928 was purchased in 2000 as a project car. I purchased it prior to finding Rennlist and I knew nobody else at the time with a 928. I removed the engine from the car due to a hole in the side of the block from the AC compressor being pulled off the block. I had the hole fabricated and filled with very little trouble and reinstalled the engine. Long story short, after 4 years of reanimating the car, I got to drive it twice before it developed a head gasket leak.
I would have implored you to replace the head gaskets while you were that close. I wish I had known somebody at the time that would have told me the same thing.
Hopefully, you'll get many years of pleasurable driving with your car without the problems I encountered. Good Luck!

After realizing I put the crankshaft pulley on backwards and the car wouldn't start, I spent about 2 hrs reversing the pulley and re timing the pulleys. After a few seconds of cranking the car fired up and after a few seconds of clatter, the engine ran smoother. Hydraulic lifter always make for a good time when not pumped up with pressure. Started the car a few times to get the tranny filled as I replaced the pan, filter, K1 spring, and external line as well as drained the torque converter.
I finally took the car through a full heat cycle today and got the timing dialed in at 20deg @ 3000rpm without vacuum line connected to distributer. Car seems to run strong and definitely revs smooth. Now that I replaced the leaky PCV hose I was able to slight bump the idle to ~825rpm so that I maintain 14V due to my GM alternator swap. Drove the car around and then put the car in neutral and topped off the tranny fluid.
So far no leaks so getting closer to handing it over to my 16yo Daughter! Have to replace a few ball joint boots on the front suspension, but other than that the only things remaining are the following:
- ball joint boots
- alignment
- charge AC and convert to R134
- have fender dent removed with paintless dent remover
- full paint correct
- hand keys to 16yo
