Default What a great road trip car!

I just did the 3-day TX to CA trip, driving through rain, sleet, snow and sunshine. Mostly interstate cruising at speed, but with twisting mountain roads on the last leg. My 928 just amazed me - performance, handling, speaker sound, and comfort. (I assisted the comfort by using a WonderGel seat pad.) Even decent MPG.

I am usually sick of driving after two days on the road - aching and tired. With the 928 I could have gone for more than three with a smile on my face. My prior best road trip car was a Cadillac sedan with the Northstar engine. The 928 beats it by a ton!

Special thanks to Sean Ratts for his great work getting the car to the point where it could perform like this!

Agreed the comfort and road-ability is excellent. I have had a couple of bad-ish experiences on long trips where my 928 has broken down, so I am sort of scared to take it beyond one day's drive away. I am acutely aware of the inherent unreliability of such an old vehicle - there's always something that's aching to snap or otherwise give up.

It's great for long trips in all weather. The only problem is it is so comfortable you begin to dose off!

It's relatively quiet and gets okay mpg, and the added perk of being like a rolling couch on long interstate drives. It's the perfect road trip car, not to mention you can cram so much crap in the back.

~8 years and 70K miles, including a number of >1K trips, only 1 failure (and that was on a trip), lots of days behind the wheel all day long, my post-surgical back doesn't mind it a bit and my brain is always highly entertained. I do stay off the interstates which helps, but what a car!

Thank you for reminding me the 928 is such a wonderful car to drive. Mine hasn't driven for a while becaude of extensive repairs front to rear so the last trip was 2012 to Stuttgart (400 miles starting from Rotterdam). It was in a dreadful S4 with vibrating brakes, and various other frustrating small defects. It was horrible. Not like the wonderful driving experience I had in my own 1978 car.

It's little bits like this, that keep my interest peaked. I have yet to drive mine any further than on and off the trailer...although she has been up to 80 mph on the lift bars....that was fun...the trip was in my head...

I agree with oldfrat.....1 week after purchasing my 89 took a road trip from CT to SC. Was the best road trip due to comfort and speed(when needed). First leg from CT to SC was a get to know period which was very rewarding. Return trip was just awesome because I now felt a ton more comfortable with car and knew how it wanted to be driven. No issues on entire 2K trip. Making trip agian March......can't wait!

I drove my 87s4 from Atlanta to 3rd Coast and back in November, little over 2,000 miles round trip. The first thing I noticed was how comfortable the sport seat was! My butt is typically numb after 3-4 hrs in my Infiniti but I had no issues on the 4 days of driving 8 hrs each to and from 3rd Coast. This was my first trip over 60 miles in the car so was definitely a leap of faith! The car performed great and I got to know her and continue to develop the to-do list such as new shocks, the road was a bit harsh, fixing pod lights and the magic blower syndrome. Most of the list is complete and I am looking forward to many more medium and long road trips! Also, its nice to know that you have ample horsepower when needed, which provided for a couple fun runs down I-20 with a Corvette and a newer Shelby Mustang!

Me, too. Drove mine off the trailer and into the garage...and its been on stands ever since. Enjoy hearing about what fun I will have...some day.

It really is a great long road trip car. Drove from Ohio to Los Angeles last spring over 4 days. Was never tired or in discomfort for the whole trip.

My first 928 ride was the dash from Denver to Los Angeles when I picked it up. It was noon by the time I got to Denver and got all the remaining paperwork taken care of. Planned stop was in Beaver, Utah at the junction of interstates 15 and 70. The car and I were certainly ready to drive on towards L.A., except for needing some headlight aiming attention. Glad I stopped, because the early morning blast through the Virgin River Gorge at sunrise, no patrol out yet, was worth every penny of the purchase price. Flawless ride, everything worked perfectly, and the best possible introduction to 928 ownership.

It's had a fair share of long and short trips since then (1997), almost 90k in fact, and is still sweet as can be for extended seat time. Nice car to arrive anywhere in.

Another interesting feature of the drive was that, nearly every time I stopped, somebody would come over and want to talk about the 928. One former owner filled with memories and nostalgia. A surprising number of people who recognized it, and expressed their lust. Many who said, "great looking car. What is it?" This happened even after the car was covered with road grime from wet roads.
