Default Ball Joint question.

My mechanic says my ball joints are starting to loosen up and will eventually need to be replaced on my 79 928. Any suggestions as to where I can find replacements, as the mechanic says he can't find them from his regular sources? When I replace the joints are there any other recommended maintenance items that I should complete in that area at that time? Thanks. Murf

Are they the original aluminum ones?

If so, don't wait.

Replace them NOW!!!

Steel ones are available from the usual suspects.

Your mechanic probably can't find them because they're the aluminum ones, and all he can find is steel. This issue is well known and it's worrying that he's telling you this. I assume he's talking about the lower ones?

Loose aluminum lower BJ's are dangerous and must be replaced, to avoid a catastrophic collapse of the front suspension.

Here's some pics of both. The changeover requires a new eccentrics each side and shortening of the retaining studs to account for the thinner steel housing (although you can just leave them projecting more).

Thanks for the info. He did say they were aluminium and couldn't find aluminum replacements. I'll get some steel ones asap. Murf

You can save some money by getting two used later style eccentrics....928 International usually has them. They are not wear items at all....
