Default Bought a parts car, got a few questions.

Hello all,

I recently bought a one owner 1978 928 in very good condition. Like most 928s however it had the classic cracking of the dash, instrument cluster ect, ect. So my plan was to find a parts car that i could take the interior parts out of and reupholster at my leisure over the winter. Then when the time comes in the spring i can swap out the new for the old quicker and not have the car in pieces out of commission as long. So i found a parts car and and brought it my dads cabin in Catskill, NY. The only catch is that he does not want it sitting in his yard for any longer then it needs to be. So my plan was to go up in the next week and take out the things i know i need, dash board, cluster, interior quarter panels, glove box ect. SOOO this leads me to my question. What else should i take out of this car before my dad makes me get rid of it? Are there essential and or hard to find parts that should come out of this car before she has to go? What will i be kicking my *** over ten years from now that i didn't take from the donor car? I'm a general contractor and by no means a mechanic, but I'm fairly capable. Also mine is standard and the donor car is an automatic, both 78's...any insight would help. Thank you guys very much
Steve

Word is that 928 values are rising. Might be a decent investment to acquire storage for the parts car and keep it. Also your list of needed parts is sure to grow.

I have a '78 and might also be interested in some parts and be able to compare cars and notes with you on parts you might need.

Having parted some 928s, here is my take. What you think is worth a lot and hard to pull, is hard to sell. Small bits that are easy to pull have value. On a '78....
Gas cap(big plus if metal from early cars), exterior aluminum window trims, matching door/hatch locks and keys, all airbox parts including straps, Any interior bits and any dash accessories from switches to AC head unit, any relays under foot panel, any exterior lighting lenses/lights.....Most of these items can be removed with a phillips head or allen wrench.

With a 78 part car, probably, yes. There are a few differences on the early cars and parts which are no longer available. Also depending on how early '78 it is, and whether its US or Euro production make a difference to parts.

Small stuff like wiper arms/blades, gas cap, window trim, dash vents, lock ***** are already in demand as people try to restore what they have. And that before 928 values have risen much.

Given that the 78's are likely to appreciate compared to other model years, finding storage for the parts car, or another 928 enthusiast with storage, might be a sensible option. 10 years is a long time and 78 parts are already reasonably rare.

to add to the previous two posts:

Grab those CIS parts and fittings: pump(s) warm up regulator and fittings, auxiliary air valve, fuel distributor, pipes and fittings around the fuel filter and accumulator (usually buggered up by amateurs by now) various sized banjos in the system...all of this stuff is getting expensive and hard to find, even cores.

Also take:
Anything nice out of the interior, no matter what color.
whole relay panel and contents, takes about 3 mins to get out...it'll save you $$$$ one day.
climate control, unique to 78 79
Anything correct from the spare tire area (cover, spare, pump, belts, bag, wrench, tools, etc)
Radio radio and accessory units
Instruments
grab all the lighting
Grill parts that aren't broken
pan under radiator if not smashed
horns under right fender

Remove everything that doesn't require a torch, air tools are your friend. Or take what you want and pass the carcass on to somebody else.

Hey thank you all very much. I cant keep the parts car cause i found it for sale close to my dads and just showed up with it asking to store it there, he couldn't say no but told me it cant stay forever, i live over two hours away an have no storage for it. That being said when i am done with it he will want the carcass out of there and i was wondering if there were an interested parties out there that may be interested, the body is in great shape, the glass is all there, the wheels turn, keys and title in hand...the interior is pretty shot. that car is located in Catskill, New York. I have pictures i can text or email. I will be there tomorrow working on it so i can take more. Let me know and thanks again

Ok i started taking stuff out of the parts car but didn't get very far, it was in the 20s and i only had a few hours. It then dawned on me that the parts car is a euro model. so my next question is this. My car is 1978 5 speed US Spec and my parts car is 1978 Auto Euro Spec. How similar or different are they actually. For instance, is the dash and interior parts that im after even swap-able? or am i in dark territory?

Gauge cluster and trans are really the only 2 different parts. Everything else is interchangeable.
