Default Exhaust Question

I am finishing up some major upgrades on my 1986.5. New paint is complete and it is looking really good. I also redid the fuel lines, a bunch a vacuum lines and all of the lines in the right fender housing. Timing belt was done last year. I still want to do something with the exhaust. I have installed a RMB and it is still really quiet. Mine has the large resonators. I'm thinking about installing a Magnaflow Cat. I really dont want gut the stock units as #1 they are very expensive and #2 there is no going back if it is too loud. Has anyone installed a Magnaflow cat on a 86.5? If so which one did you use, what did you do with the O2 sensor and the tubing associated with the stock unit? I do not want it to sound like a ttop fuel dragster, I just want it to be a little more "manly" than it is...

I have a very well outfitted shop, tools, mig welder, tig welder, etc., so custom work on the exhaust getting a new cat installed is not a problem.

Thanks in advance for your help
Andy

Instead of a aftermarket cat, most go with an X pipe as it will add the sound you are looking for and won't get clogged in 2 years like AM cats would.

Can you do the x-pipe and keep the cat? I live in VA and during the annual inspection process they check for cats. They do not check the exhaust gasses. However, they do check to make sure the cats are in place..

I don't know about Magnaflow but Borla makes great stainless setup that is a straight bolt on from the cat back.

I think there is a you tube video so you can hear how the Borla sounds on a 928.

You can buy them from Crowder's direct for about $650 and has a million mile warranty.

You can use high flow cats welded onto the x pipe. Those are really cheap and don't last but have the matrix spread wide enough to where they wont clog.

Is there still a Borla cat-back for '86.5? I could never find one. Ironically, my '86.5 has a Borla muffler but the rest of the exhaust seems to be custom or at least non-stock and I'm not really sure what it is. The Borla does sound great...but it's oddly not THAT loud, and I have headers and no pre-silencers although I do still have cats.

There is no Borla cat back for the 85+ cars only 84 and before as it is only a single 3 inch pipe.

There are other aftermarket exhausts made by Greg Brown and 928 Motorsports that are available, however both are expensive. It may cost less to have a shop custom fab you one.

You can always put in an x-pipe (with the associated performance increase) with or without cats (I think) and if it's still too quiet, remove the pre-silencers, or replace them with the small later ones. Most comments I've seen on that seem to suggest it's too loud, but of course it's all personal taste.

Maybe the best bet is to just do the X pipe and swap the original pipe with the cat back in once a year for inspection. So that brings up the next question... Who has the best deal on a X pipe. I have looks around a little. Looking at the pricing, most seem to be very "proud"of what they are selling.

Thanks in advance

A while back I put a similar post together about Y pipes for the 84 928S. What most responded telling me that unless I did motor work I was wasting money and no power change would occur. But if loud is what you want then that is a different story.

X pipe with high flow cats is a great idea.
Smaller mid mufflers might also meet your intentions.
Or, custom.

What about long tube headers such as MSDS? The claim is something like 20% power increase. I don't know what the increase is, but my butt meter says it is substantial. I've got MSDS on my '84

After dropping the buy-in cost of MSDS and/or install, the placebo effect is probably formidable.

Whaddya mean by that? If they advertise it, it has to be true, doesn't it? What are you gonna tell me next? that the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus aren't real people?

But the headers are noisier.

We have plenty of ecstatic customers that have purchased this unit and are too ready to prove to you what we build works! The first time you fire this ”X” pipe up, you will know it is something special…

Beware of a competitor selling an off the shelf X-pipe that performs so poorly they have to use the largest point of difference to demonstrate their horsepower gains. Take a look at our power increases. No stories here, we make the most horsepower hands down. They don't even come close.

The ”X” Crossover pipe replaces the factory dual cat center section on 1985-1995 on US & Euro cars. The secret of this unit is using pulses created from one side of the engine to pull the exhaust gas out from the other side more easily and rapidly.

Credit has to be given where deserved!!! As we didn't start this process, but we did perfect it! The credit for the initial development work goes Louis Ott. He turned it over to us at Motorsport Slc, he said he had more important things going on now... Dave Lomas worked for months fine-tuning this unit with over 50 Dyno pulls and all sorts of power analysis to back this product. And now, 100’s of our customers saying thanks by buying our ”X” pipe… Telling & showing us how well it works…
