Steering pump died - Top end tick after TB/WP and oil change
Edit: ticking one night, groaning the next day. Purging onto the floor after a drive. Power steering pump was unhappy. Original message below
---
Any thoughts on suspects for a top end tick that showed up only after a TB/WP and oil change? I've had the car for about a year and around 1,000 miles. Did not notice the tick before, had not changed the oil before. It had only short drives to move it around the lot for the last few months since the TB light showed up once on a spirited run to the next town. (Kempf showed way loose when I got it open.) Also the temps have been very cold the last week or two while I've had it empty of coolant (though not of oil.) Tick is in rhythm with the exhaust burble (as ticks tend to be.) Only started it twice and didn't spend enough time to locate it top/bottom/left/right. I do have a minor exhaust leak at the passenger manifold but this seemed much more pronounced than that had been, I don't think it's exhaust.
So... maybe a lifter as described here?:

Any chance that it will go away with some break-in time? (wishful thinking.) It did seem to get louder as it warmed up tonight. Put a bit of a damper on my TB/WP completion celebration.

1 year....1000 miles...shorts drive...cold....how long did it take you to do the Tbelt job??.
IMO Car just needs to be driven for a while. Ive had it in mine in the past after it sat for an extended period of time.
A couple of runs to redline are in order. After my Tbelts ive always allowed the car to warm up. I go for a drive...come back listen...if there is nothing odd i go hammer it for a while. If its gonna fail...its gonna fail. People have blown timing belts at idle at stoplights.
Stans advise is probably the right direction..although i thinkg they updated the plugs for your model year?

what is the oil pressure at hot idle?
Its possible one of the cam journal block off plugs has come out,
and thus a reduced amount of oil pressure is being delivered to the lifters

Injectors will be ticking twice as fast. Get a mechanics stethoscope, touch it to the fuel rails. That's injectors, once per revolution. Lifters and exhaust, once every second rev.
If the belt tension is correct, and the belt is tracking OK (as viewed through the peek-holes) then do what Tony says.

TB job took two weeks. Sunday 1 disassembly, Sunday 2 it was 12f in the garage so I stayed in, Sunday 3 (plus Monday night) and it's done.
Got to say "hammer it and see what breaks" is my default philosophy, so glad to hear a consenting voice
Oil pressure was normal - pegged 'till it warmed up then it was falling when it got to temp, hadn't got below 4 (just starting to heat up) when I got a little concerned about the tick and turned it off. Added a bit more oil (was on the bottom notch on the dip stick) and fired up again. Still ticking. Will take it out tomorrow if it stays dry and I can find time. (I have to hook up the truck or the jeep to the scout to drag it out of the way to get the 928 out of the garage... oh, and air up one of the scouts tires too.)

Are you sure it's actually coming from the engine? I have a persistent tick that I was worried was engine-related, but I could swear now it's coming from in front of the engine...maybe fan or fan clutch or some other accessory. It doesn't happen if the engine is off and you manually rotate the fan, and sometimes on initial start-up it's not there. Those mechanic's stethoscopes are good to have...I borrowed a friends, and heard lots of reassuring little engine noises but nowhere on the engine side could I find that tick. Although I don't know why doing your TB job would have made something like that appear...

I think it was the steering pump. Got in it today, and got on it today. As soon as I got the car off the jack stands the pump was groaning bad (no squeal)... I thought "maybe the belt is too tight" so I loosened it a bit and went for a drive. Less groaning, power assist was improving, foaming in the reservoir but I figured it was self purging. After ~18 mile drive (including a stop for fuel) I pulled into the garage and shut it off. As I'm walking out of the garage I hear it pissing on the floor. Bad sound. Took a look under and it was coming from the area of the steering pump. Opened up and I can see one of the power steering pump bolts (not one of the three adjusters, one behind the pulley) has pulled out an inch or so.
So - back on the lifts again. Hope we get some warm weekends.
