WTB decent 928, west coast.
Hello there. I've been lurking for a while but I thought I'd say hi.
I'm looking for an early, decent useable (but not show quality) automatic 928 that's as original as possible. Ideally a California car in any color except red.
I'm currently trawling all the usual places as recommended on this forum but I thought I would reach out in the offchance that someone may have a pointer or two for where I can find my 928.
I've found this forum really useful in getting an idea of what what to avoid. I'm not looking for a project but I quite like tinkering so it doesn't have to be mint. Feel free to chime in on what I should realistically budget, I was thinking (hoping) I could find something for between $6.5-10k
Thanks in advance for any help!

Early auto I think best model year is the 1984, last of the 16v US cars, can still be found in nice condition and tends to have lower PM costs. Next three months are a great time to buy.
Early cars and SoCal get a bit more focus on Pelican, so I would ask there as well.
Buy as nice of a car as you can, but keep some money in reserve for bringing it up to date and safe.

Actually, just re-reading that ad: 'smog pump and cat delete'. That'll be problematic here in California.
Just another reach-out: if anyone knows a decent early auto car, please do get in touch, thanks.

Hi truecoyote. Thanks for that. I'm constantly monitoring all the usual places. Sold my everyday car, using a rental right now, I have cash waiting so I'm ready to pounce when something comes up.

Thanks for your reply and advice Fogey1
Yep, I hear ya. Could be a massive disaster particularly as I'm looking at the lower end price-wise.
I'm going to look at a car this weekend which is exactly the year, spec and color I'm interested in. I may be letting my heart rule my head on this as it has a few niggles like a/c not working and cracks in the dash (I hear both are common). The most concerning issue is a 'tiny' leak in the transmission. It's just had work done on the tranny and is under warranty. I'll do some investigation.
If anyone wants to chime in with any little nuggets of advice, please do!

No interior pics, but this one looks nice. I think it is an 86.5, which is a plus.

I am actually looking at an '83 at the weekend. I'm doing my homework on what a slow leaking transmission may mean. I'm pleased to learn that it's a similar unit (or shares many components) with a Mercedes R107 box. I've owned two Mercedes SL's and I'm very familiar with those units. Anyone care to chime in on that?

Sorry, I missed the red exception.
Given your criteria, you will certainly find a nice one soon. If you ever want company checking one out, please feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the link MJ928. I did see that ad but discounted it as red is the only color I won't consider.

Be sure to check e-Bay occasionally for Porsche 928. Also, here are two good sites to check.
http://www.autotraderclassics.com/index.xhtml
http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/carsforsale/
You'll find plenty of left coast cars there now.
Also be sure to check the new visitor thread near the top of the index here. It has a ton of info that will be useful in educating you as a buyer.
I bought my first 928 this Fall. I have never enjoyed a car as much. Having spent several months prior to that shopping for American muscle cars, I am amazed at the prices of 928s. They are far superior to the cars I looked at and cost only a fraction of the price. Maintenance and parts may possibly cost more, but the parts you need can be found. I was also delighted to find that buying one gets you "membership" in an amazing group of 928 owners -- as nice a group as you'll ever meet.
