Why won't VW dome light fit?
Was curious to try one of those VW dome light replacements, even though I replaced my temperamental original Hella roof lights with new ones a few years ago, and and they have been fine (albeit with LED festoons installed).
I thought the grey VW lights would be nice match for my Classic Grey interior too, so picked one up (99p - around $1.60) on eBay to experiment with pigtails. Found that sub-micro spade terminals work well crimped into blade connectors.
Electrically the light is fine, but surprised to find it doesn't fit physically at the front! I knew the hatch lights require a little work on the surround but thought the other roof lights drop straight in. When I slide the connector side into one side of the roof aperture, the other - sprung - side won't stay in, but springs out. The light is a used one but looks absolutely fine.
Anyone else experienced this? Maybe the roof lining around aperture in my car has not shrunk away enough to allow VW light to fit in?
(The light is actually a nice match to interior, but the flash makes it look a lot lighter)

Yes, push the side spring in about 2-3 mm. It will pop in. I have put two into my roof and installed replacement LED 5630 9 diode lights. Interior is now way bright with the lights on.
Note that the spring can get stuck on the lip of headliner if you try to pop it back out. So I would hold off installing until you have it wired up and ready to use. You can pry it out, but it tends to bed the spring and you have to bend it back to reinstall.

The spring on the end frequently gets mangled when the lights are pulled from the donor vehicle. Try to rebend it so it is as close to flush with the body of the lamp as you can get it.

I am missing the springs on two of my VM dome lights. Roger couldn't source them- they come in one piece. Short of buying used VW dome lights, anyone have ideas on how I could replace them?

My dome light keep dropping out and the only thing I had was an aluminum beer can tab so I bent it in half and slipped it up with light and it's been holding for about 2 weeks now. There's got to be a better fix. mjh

On one of my cars the stock dome light falls out, I think due to headliner shrinkage. This light fit snug in my other 928 but I pulled it to put the VW lamp in and use the old one to replace the broken lamp in the other car. I'll probably bend a piece of aluminum scrap to make up the difference and make sure it's hidden by the bezel.

Drill a 1/4 hole and replace the spring with this: http://www.mcmaster.com/#8483a59/=udr2wj
I looked at some Google images of the VW lights and I think the spring on mine has not been mangled. Spent an hour or so this morning trying different ways of bending it, but it is either too loose do drops slightly, or too tight and springs out!
My factory light is fine as I fitted new when acquired this car, but I thought the VW lights would be more reliable update so no urgency. When I revisit it so will try your plunger idea.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the VW dome lamp pigtails to 928 dome light spade connectors? I bought the lamps from Roger and sent him an email to see if he has a diagram but thought i wouldm also try here. I would nrather not experiment, i don't even know which pin is ground on the VW connector. thanks .

Mine was a pitantonget in correctly.... It was due to liner shrinkage.
Itnhad sort of rolled a nitnat the egdes and become thicker.
I modified the spring clipmand it works like a charm.
