Tie rod end boot

Tie rod end boot
Think I might have finally found a decent substitution for the tie rod end boot problem. Like many here, I have had torn ball joint boots prompting replacement of the entire unit as well as an alignment. My tie rod ends are tight. My inner tie rod ball joints are also sound.
I also happen to have a set of new boots on the shelf for a restoration in the stall next the 83 928s. They looked to be basically the same size and shape as the rotten boots so I measured them. The 928s small ID was about 15mm and outer was 28mm. The Moss motors PN 263-400 boots were 12mm x 26mm. They are only about $3 for the pair so I am giving them a shot.
old split boot halves on left, Moss boot on right
installed
They installed really quite easily. Both bottom and top clips installed on the MGB boot as if the boot was made for this purpose. You read that right. The boots I installed were made for any year MGB. Will report if there are any problems.
A big thank you to all the folks who contribute knowledge and advice here. I have found the information here indispensable since picking up the 928. I hope this experiment works and helps someone out.

This would be awesome if you give it the thumbs up after some driving.

Deal. I'll have to give it a little time and see.
The only other spec I wanted to see was to measure the shaft on the MGB tie rod to compare to the 928.
I'll post result for those interested.
Roger,
My son and I are hoping to make it up to breakfast sometime. You can get your own look at this if you want. Thanks for all the parts!

The MGB tie rod comes to about 14mm at the small diameter of the boot. That makes the MG boot made for an application within a few mm or so at both ends.

Interesting alternative, hope it works.., found this link ( Moss brothers Europe ) and they list that part, least I think it,s that one. Stand to be corrected.

see item #46, MG part number 17H3501
The MG Owners Club (MGOC) in Cambridgeshire UK
http://www.mgocspares.co.uk/acatalog...__MGB__47.html also use the original MG part number system and the boot is part number 17H3501, item #92. They have a really neat shop in Swavesey by the way. V8 MGBs like they were of the showroom floor.
shipping would be cheaper to US from Moss USA:
http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewP...tOrder=250#top
part number 263-400, see item #16
or Victoria British under part number 0-196
http://www.victoriabritish.com/icata....aspx?Page=122
see item #11
I cannot vouch to the quality of any supplier except Moss USA where I obtained the test boots I'm using. They seem pretty well made but only time can tell if they will stand up. They were on the shelf for a year or so and on the 928 for only a few days now

Burning Brakes
Darn, just ordered the tie-rod ends with boots as mine were blown. Will definitely want to hear if these hold up after a couple years. Would be a great alternative.

[QUOTE=rotenDrachen;11751763]That page refers to morris minor parts. I have no idea if that part is appropriate. For what I am testing, please refer to this page of Moss Europe:

It appears the testing of this boot on the '83 may be cut to two weeks. Hit a deer and it looks like the car may be totaled. Boot performed perfectly for this short time though.
Anyone got a cow catcher for an early 928?
