Sadly for that price one can get a 928 that is at least current with its license plate and smog, and at least a running 928 with maybe some records As it was said earlier S4 money pretty much.

Shame being I like that year's model + the rims + red + well sorted out interior, speakers, and the old style steering wheel
And it looks like it got AC in the rear too

I wonder if one can ask them if they can sell it for less?

Here is a similar car on Oahu for reasonable money. Not running and $1k+ owed in back taxes, I think. I suspect a fuel pump / injection issue as there is nobody here who can do a good job of repairing these things for reasonable money. Wish someone would save it.

Shipping to the mainland is about a grand. Goes up and down a bit based on fuel costs. I think to the mainland is a bit less than coming here as demand is less. Mark Anderson was looking at buying a car from here a while back and looking at that issue and might have a special way to do it. Normally cars have to be running, and I think, in current registration. Matson has a monopoly on the actual shipping, but I think others have different ways of wrapping the shipping inside a service package. I think Mark may have had a way to ship a non running car, and perhaps non registered. If it could be shipped non registered I don't know if you could register it in Texas without first paying the Hawaii registration. I would guess it might be possible, as Texans are kind of outlaws in general . You cannot register it here unless it is running because it has to pass a safety check.
Shipping to Maui would be via Young Brothers. I know you can ship things on trailers, so one choice, if you want to get it running on Maui, would be to put it on a U haul trailer and ship it that way. I was looking at shipping a HobieCat from the Big Island via their service about a year ago and it was $200 or $300.
I have not seen the car myself, but it has been on CL for a long long time on and off and I think it could be had for even less than $1500. That does not mean it is a bad car. It is just that there is no market for them here and having it fixed here could be expensive and painful due to no GB or Sean or such like. I would not particularly expect corrosion issues from a Hawaii Kai car. Pretty hot and dry there.
If there was serious interest I could be able to go see the car. I could even take out a battery and do a compression check or something if the owner would allow it, although it would make sense to start with what the current owner thinks is wrong with it and get a history there. I could possibly arrange a spot to where it could be worked on for a few days and help getting it towed there, if someone wanted to come in and get it running here prior to shipment somewhere else. Not enough to swap a motor but enough to change a fuel pump and manage some relay issues.
I can point to a local mechanic that has not screwed up too badly for me yet, although I do the hard stuff myself, and he did just quote me $900 to change a set of rear wheel bearings which has me a bit ticked off at him.

I have the (overdue) registration bill for my 88 here on my desk and it is $308. So guessing (2014-2011)*$300 ~= $1000 in back registration.

Well, that lets me out.

$1500 for the car, $1000 back taxes, $500 repairs to get running, $1100 shipping.

Meh - no thanks.

Only good for non-Cali residents where they can avoid the taxes or can you avoid the taxes?

If you are referring to me, I was discussing the recent offer of a red in Hawaii. The total cost just to get it to me from there is way out of bounds.

Even in your case, if you are out of state, do we actually pay the back taxes of the car of the state that it is coming from?

There is virtually no standardization from state to state on DMV regs.

Registering an older 928 in Georgia from out of state requires only a notarized bill of sale, and they couldn't care less about taxes due somewhere else. Alabama is pretty much the same.

Michigan is the same as long as you have a signed over title they will register it regardless of what is due in another state.

It can't go on the boat unless it's registered, and running. Ergo - fix, tax, register, ship. $$$$$$$

That depends on what company you use to ship, some companies are strict, some are not, and if you just use a cargo freight box they could care less.
All 3 methods kinda requires us Rennlist buddies to help you purchase and ship the car regardless.
