Default Battery Replacement -Need Recommendation

Hello. My Bosch battery reached the end of its life today so I purchased an AutoCraft Gold replacement from Advanced Auto Parts. It seems to be a bit taller and I can't get the battery cover door closed. I plan to return it tomorrow.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a battery that fits, is readily available (NJ), and is easy on the wallet?

Thanks in advance.

The trick is to get the correct battery and not just one that they say will fit. When I get them (happens a lot, apparently) they'll pull out a battery that is the right height and depth but is not as wide as the stock battery. That is, it's short, front-to-back, in the hole. This can be OK except that it doesn't work with the battery hold-down.

Perhaps a search, or another list member, can turn up the right battery size.

If you go to autozone, have them check battery spec for 89, 90, 91, 93 and see which one matches the older battery. From memory one of these years that they have in their database is not correct.

You need a Group 48 battery.

The Group 49 is for older cars.

Thanks. Maybe I will try Autozone. The battery I bought from Advanced Auto Parts is a 48. Still slightly higher than the Bosch I'm replacing.

Get a Group 48 - I'd say the brand is actually less important than buying at a store that has a warranty good at lots of locations across the region you will be driving. Given a good likelihood of failure in its service lifetime - you want a hassle free replacement wherever you are...

Batteries of this size are only made by a few manufacturers then are labelled as different brands... makes very little difference...

If the one you got was really a group 48 - it should have the exact same dimensions - you sure you had it installed under the front clip (not on top) and that the rear hold down was secured properly. You must tightly secure the battery in a 928 - else it will bounce into the lid...

Alan, the battery is definitely a 48 and I made sure the battery lip went under the metal flange. Still didn't fit. I looked again at the Bosch that was in there and it was a 40R. Looks like the former owner had the same issue and went with a smaller battery. Any thoughts? Any harm in using a 40? Thanks for your help.

Maybe show us a good picture of your battery & the battery well & lid..?

Where did the lid hit - everywhere? front? back?

Sears DieHard Gold GP 48/H6 Battery #22833148 Paid $150.05. Got the battery service for an extra $20.00.

Fits. Works. Was in stock and installed within 20 minutes. I've had to throw a battery tender on it for no starts due to unrelated parasitic drains.

Hope it helps!

Hits the lid.... In the past, folks have fitted Group 24 and various Optima batteries into the wells, and discovered that the high terminals don't fit comfortably under the lid without shorting things out. Too often the "solution" is to fit an insulator like rubber or plastic mat to the lid. Does your car have an 'extra' layer from a previous tall-battery fitment?

The Group 48/H6 battery has the terminals in recesssed wells on top, so the tops of the terminals are at the same or slightly below the height of the top of the case. The positive ternminal is fitted with a plastic insulating cover that snaps on and folds down to protect the terminal area from accidental contact. A little creative carving in that little cover lets it fit over the cable connector and the exiting wiring. Be sure to add a protective layer of Vaseline on the tightened terminal area. Fit the vent hose, and run a bit of tubing from the vent port out through the positive cable grommet and down below the bottom of the battery well. That way corrosive/explosive gasses will be vented safely outside the battery box.

Some folks have also fitted battery mats under the battery - this raises the battery and makes it tough
to get it under the front lip fully... look for that too.

My 79 has a diehard. -a monster of a battery. It came with the car when I bought it 5 ? years ago and still cranking. I keep a small battery Minder on it in the winter. (not the same deal as a "battery tender")
the Minder has a desulfating function. so far, so good.

Early cars have a quite different battery box and battery requirement (Group 49)
