And 928 International has these 3 speeds stacked up like stinking cordwood, outside.

Like I said, finding a good used one is going to be very random....

EGA, also I agree with the flush, might be a good time to replace the transmission lines as well. I went with custom made high pressure hydraulic lines that we use in the oil field. They have no leak fittings and are made for much more extreme conditions that they will see in the 928. My shifting was really improved after the 2x flush and line replacement. ( Bowden cable adjustment also)

No doubt. There's a fair amount of oil coming from the back of the motor...

Not yet. I'm starting cheap and easy: The car is going in tomorrow to have the transmission flushed. We'll see what happens after that.

Good. Because that's too much for a 3 speed anyhow.

Preface; I know nothing about the Merc auto in the 928.

Caution; In some GM and Chrysler trans, if you flush the old fluid out, the trans won't shift anymore. Something to do with the clutches being used to the dirty fluid? Might ask around from folks more in tune with the Merc and see if this is a concern.

That 82 auto trans is going to be on that shelf a long, long time. I was thinking more like $4-500 for the 3 sp models, but again - I have no experience.

From what I've seen poking around on the internet, you're in the ballpark. $400 is going to be my offer if I need it. I already have a line on one that will certainly be cheaper, and if I'm going to go more expensive, I'd just as soon keep my money in the 928 community and buy one of the ones that are apparently stacking up like cordwood at 928 Int'l.

I had the 4 speed in my 86 with a first gear start setup and that was possibly the best trans I've ever had. With the work involved in swapping, I sure would move up to the 4 speed. If you can find one with LSD that would be even better, but the shifting on the 4 speed is very fine.

When I got my 86.5 It shifted liked like a 78 ram pickup (clunky and hard for those not familiar). Got the fluid changed and replaced the filter. Runs 200% better now. Did you ask to change the filter too?

So, I ran into a guy at the PCA meeting last night that I hadn't met before. He lives about 30 minutes north of me and he has three Sharks: A DD car, a project car, and an '86 PARTS CAR!

Needless to say, he's my New Best Friend.
