Default Tach wire killing the engine Alan Please help

Hi we have a 1989 S4 with a 5 speed at Frenzy
we had the ezk fail with the classic clicking injectors
so we swapped in another ezk from a 87 s4.

the car started then stopped,
so we swapped in the other lh loaner and it ran,

then the engine died after driving for 5 miles
swapping out the running relays still no start ,

fuel pump fuse is good.

finally swapping back the to the lh the car runs then dies and wont restart ,

the fuel pump is running when cranking but the injectors are not pulsing,
also the tach isnt moving at all when cranking and it seems as if it should

the brain trust at this point is pointing to one of the wires at the w connector that drives the tach signal as possibly causing the no start.

we need to know what wire to remove from the panel to isolate the tach .
Thanks for your time

Stan,

For an '89 the tach signal starts at the EZK, pin 13 then to LH-1 (bl/wt),
then to CE panel W11 (bl/wt),
thru the CE panel to the kickdown relay XV (should be missing for a 5-speed) and continues to J11,
from J11 it goes to diagnostic connector pin 14 (gn/bk) and also to Digidash, plug-4 pin 7 (gn).

So W11 should have a single bl/wt wire, can be isolated there-- leaving tach connected from EZK to LH only. .
That will disconnect the tach (and diag connector and kickdown relay socket), and if any of those are shorted then the engine should run.

Thanks for the assistance
we have swapped out the relays and the fuel pump fuse , also swapped the ezk and lh.

cranks strong and we have fuel but no injectors are clicking ,

we cut w 11 wire no changes, cranks but wont fire.

suspect a possible crank position sensor.

Thanks Craig,
Hans and Sean and Pete plus other local suspects are all taking turns with the car.

Yes, it does sound like the brain trust is there.
I have no doubt we will soon hear how you vanquished the enemy.

OK looks like we have things wrapped up
one of my used but good 53 relays was not in fine condition and was causing the not running issues as well as the owners LH relay being bad
with the wire cut from W11 the tach wont function we have the car back together
Thanks for you help everyone.

so to summarize this we fixed this with a good LH loaner from Pete and a few 53 relays

Thank you everyone for your hours of work and effort on this one. I drove here home to Philly today with Gary Knox as my wingman. No stalling or engine issues and she drove perfectly.

Thanks again!

To all you guys who helped Jason get Helga's 'game on' again, great work. I could barely keep up with him all the way up I-95!!! So glad she's back in the game.

To all others - IF you haven't replaced your 53 relays, be sure to keep at least two good spares in the car!!!

Ahh late to this party... busy most of the day yesterday and not checking rennlist again until today

But seems like Jim got you exactly the data you wanted - and in any case a fine outcome!
