Introduction from a drooling OB fan...

In fact, bring a shovel along with the crowbar since I'll probably be buried in it.
I'm glad you are refining your desires before jumping in. Best of luck on finding that special car! BTW, S4 brakes make a HUGE difference. I will be posting updates on how I accomplished this upgrade on my car in the next couple of weeks or so... lots of updates pending.

Seth, this one has a sunroof but is on the low side of your budget.

Thanks, Brian, I will keep this one in mind.
However, zekgb does have a point.
Sharkskin, you have definitely EARNED your shark. I will respectfully steer clear of it. As for the S4 brakes, I was shown just how effective they are by a ride in a hot 1986.5 with S4 brakes through the NC mountains on Saturday...
Thanks!

If you are going OB, you might end up with the manual seats, which you "might" not have to do the sunroof delete. So try it out before you do the delete (that is unless you "want" automatic seats)
That and auto vs manual, it all depends on your driving conditions of your area. My area is not a good idea to do manual for a daily driver =\
Just take your time, you should be able to get something that is well maintained for south of 10k.

OP should be looking at RedPanda's car even if it has a sunroof. If he hasn't found a buyer by Sharktoberfest I'll try to talk him into settling for my 85 auto instead of the 86 he's looking for

Just stumbled on this thread. Great to see that you're doing thorough methodical research before purchasing. I look forward to hearing about your 928 when you find 'the one'.
As you can see, I too think 5 speeds are definitely the way to go ... good choice

Hey Seth! Great to meet you at SITM. I did not read all the way through, but I know of a near mint 79 euro 5 speed, that is in your budget. Being an early OB fan myself, if I had the jack, it would be hiding in my shop right now. If you want more details, PM me. (BTW, it was at SITM). I have no association, other than knowing about it, and knowing the owner, and wanting it for myself......

RedPanda, I did not know about the manual seats. I thought all the seats were powered. Good to know.
I understand what you mean about practicality versus desire for the transmission.
An auto would be a better choice, but since I am (naively) envisioning my 928 as a toy, my heart screams for a 5spd.
Thanks for the advice! I am quietly building up my slush fund and learning as much as I can. Going to SITM 2015 was a real eye-opener, and has greatly solidified my goals and desires.
Damned glad to meet you too, Ron! I very much enjoyed talking to you. Thanks for the heads up. At this moment, I am leaning towards an '86 or later 928.
We shall see...
Thanks, Dave928S!

If you get to North Atlanta
Hi Seth,
If you think you may be in the North Atlanta area come by and have a look and ride on El Guapo. I was very fortunate to be the next caretaker of this particular example and have only tried to improve on it. Love this car and it does not fail to amaze. It has some very tasteful mods and runs extremely well.
See you in Atl if you can make it.

Post script to this thread:
I ended up with a Guards Red 1986.5 928S with a Rogerbox.
It is my daily driver.
Be careful what you wish for...
