Replacing/Repairing/Updating HID headlights??
Hi All
Back in 2006 I purchased a HID Conversion Kit from 928 Specialists and had a guy do a professional install of them (looked like a bigger hassle than I wanted to try). They were just a single beam (ie no hi/low option).
Anyway, have been real pleased with them and these bulbs have lasted all this time until THIS weekend. Now one is out. The bulb looks OK, the fuses are fine, so I'm wondering if maybe the ballast is bad.
I assume some of you all may have installed these.
Has anybody had to replace components -is there anything else I can just plug & play without digging down in there and replacing everything?
If anybody did upgrade entirely to something else- what are people recommending?
Thanks in advance!

I put those LED's in my daughter's Mustang recently and was very impressed with the brightness and color of the light. I paid $99 for a set on eBay. What you can't see in the picture is there is another LED on the opposite side, one for low beam and one for high. This should be perfect for our headlight design, but it's not so good for the Mustang which has a different design I can't quite figure out. I have HID's in my 86.5 but may try these in my 87.
On the original post.... I would think you need to replace everything, ballast and bulbs together since you won't be able to buy separate parts. Fairly cheap and easy.

HID lighting in H5 lamps actually don't work very well IMO... you may have liked the extra light - compared to a stock H5 most things seem an upgrade.
But - using HID in H5s just means you are blinding others on the road - the light goes everywhere.
So this really isn't a smart move.
For H5 lamps this is inherant with HID - due to the different light focal point shape of the capsule and the very poor beam control of the DOT incandescent reflector/lenses. Even brighter incandescent bulbs don't work very well in these lamps.
Despite how much YOU liked it you should probably move on to something that actually works OK for everyone...

I think you and Don above are both correct in that 1) I'd need to replace everything (ballast, igniters etc), and yes, the lights may not be so favorable for opposing traffic. Since I'm not going to put all new lamps in so I may just return them to stock lo/hi.

Below is a photo of the LEDs on Antsmands' car at the Sharks in St. Charles gathering.
These are definitely on my to-do list. Seriously cool looking and iirc they are DOT legal.

Wow.
After doing some night driving I have noticed that the cumulative effect of
33 year-old headlight design, + a 33 year-old windshield (?) + and 49 year-old eyeballs = leave quite a bit to be desired.
After searching I have found this thread, and I wonder if
" The LEDs on Antsmands' car at the Sharks in St. Charles gathering" (shown above) would be available in some sort of a kit ? Where would one start ?
Thanks!
Dan
