help - rear fog lights not working
1984 Euro S auto: I just realised my MOT is well overdue and the test revealed my power steering pipes are leaking (being mended as we speak ready to be re-fitted) but also neither rear fog lights work. They used to a while back buy I've not used them for at least a year. The fronts work fine
So, the switch lamp glows gently when the headlights are on but the rear fog switch is in the off position. When it's depressed the switch lamp goes off. As opposed to the front fogs that also glow gently when headlights on but front fogs off but when the switch is depressed the switch lamp glows brightly.
Also, when the front fogs are switched on and off, relay 6 clicks. No clicking when the rear fogs are switched on and off.
I need to solve this quickly to be within the statutory 2-week free MOT re-test time!
I tried swapping the front and rear switches over but no joy.
Fuse number 1 appears to be fine.
So, do the rear fogs have a relay and if so is it the same one as the front fogs. I can only see one fog light relay on the charts?
Any other ideas of what to test / swap?? Many thanks in advance for your assistance
Tim

Did you check the bulbs and fuse #34? Here is a link to 928 Specialist's fuse/relay charts for '84: https://www.928gt.com/default5.htm
Cheers!

Thanks Carl - I missed that fuse but sadly, on inspection, it's good! Both bulbs look good too - one was new 1.5 years ago when they were both working fine.
Is the rear fogs supposed to be on the same relay as the front fogs?
I swapped the switches over (front and rear fogs) and the switch originally on the rears works absolutely fine on the fronts ie. glows brightly when pressed. So it's clearly not a switch, fuse nor bulb problem. Need some info on the relay operation and potentially the wiring route to check. Tim

OK then try this...assuming good bulbs....
and from fuse 34, then power seems to go to a three way connection point and two pin connector in the rear hatch area, (power and ground are in the same connector) the ground is shared between both lights on the rear body panel through that connector...ground point is possibly drivers on side of rear hatch area...possibly. Each light also has it's own 2 pin connector for power and ground.

Well, I don't have any interior trim fitted so once I know what I'm looking for, tracing and testing should be straightforward. I'll look for these connectors in the morning. Thanks

OK Found it. No relay. Not sure why. On the CE Panel connector E pin #2 comes from the switch (and that tested good right?), goes through fuse 34 then comes out connector S pin #8 and heads directly to the two pin connector in the back, that further divides into two two pin connectors , one for each light...I think

Are you turning the front fogs on when you try the rears?
The rear fogs won't work if the fronts aren't on. The rear switch goes completely out when you push it if the fronts aren't on. It glows just like the front if you push it when the fronts are on.

AH-HA! Well thank you Wisconsin Joe for explaining yet another peculiarity of this car. Now it is clear that both switches seem to be operating exactly as they should but the rear lights still don't come on. So thank you Aminion for your info on the routing - I'll follow this through tonight as well as installing the new power steering pipes. Then maybe I'll get my MOT next week…
Tazzieman - you're still welcome although we might not still have Scotland if you were to come back ;-)

the wire connection for the lamps will be under the rear PU cover it runs along the bumper,
sometimes the barrel connection gets corroded use some deoxit on all of the connections.
follow the wire back to the rear bulkhead and clean any connections,
also check the rear tire well for dirty grounds.
Make sure that the bulbs are good,
and that your getting power to the lamp socket ,
verify you have a good ground

Seems you are doing a quite a lot of work on the car here. In the pod there is one extra socket for a pod switch. It is taped up and not used.
In a USA car this is the rear fog switch (since there aren't any). In a ROW car it is the dashboard reset switch (which is located elsewhere using a different switch).
I'm not sure how compatible the connectors are - but they do have the same functional pins. Looking at the configuration - if you plugged the foglamp switch into the reset connector - the switch light would go out when it is activated - which is what you observe, (and obviously the foglights would not come on).
Check for the other pod switch connector - could these have been swapped accidentally ?
Both the Reset switch (USA) and the Rear Foglight switch (ROW) fit in the same location (bottom left) - so they both reach to this position.
