79 never seen before oil pressure low warning light segment on gauge behavior
Today I noticed a new issue I had not seen before.
When I first turn on the ignition key all the warning lights illuminate as called out in the owners manual.
However after about 10 seconds of ignition on and no start attempted the oil pressure low segment on the gauge begins to flash as does the master warning.
Once the car is started all lights are out.
I don't remember seeing this before and don't see an explanation in the owners manual or in searches here.

Jim,
I'll look and see if I can find where I found a reference for this before.
i want to say that low oil pressure and low brake fluid are the two conditions where you will get a flashing master warning and flashing segment light.
all others warnings are steady lights.
I know I read it before and will do my best to send you the reference.
I've not tried to turn the key on and let it sit to see if I get the flashing oil prior to start. I'm in Dallas this weekend but will check mine when I get home tomorrow night and let you know what she does.

from owners manual,
central warning and associated system light will flash for:
oil pressure, low brake fluid level, low brake pressure.
this one is interesting and may be applicable:
ENGINE OIL warning light flashes if, with
the ignition on, the engine stationary, and
the vehicle in level position, the amount of
oil in the sump is less than 1.59 U.S. gal. or
6 liters. Do not attempt to start the engine!
Add oil at once!
the last one may be in play in your situation.
I'll check mine when I get home.

Thanks Paul.
The light I have flashing is the red segment light for low pressure on the oil pressure indicator itself.
Oil level is good and the "engine Oil" light functions as prescribed above.

Hey Jim,
just checked.
when I turn the key on but don't start the engine, all warning lights and master come on but nothing flashes. I let it sit with the key on without starting for a couple minutes with no changes. all lights remain lit (except my low fuel which apparently is burnt out) until I start or turn it off. after starting the lights go out expected.
i don't get any flashing oil pressure or master light and I did let it try for a couple minutes.
I'd suspect your low oil level float/switch may have broken.

It is the low pressure segment light on the gauge itself.
Illuminates when key is initially turned on as it is suppose to and then after 5-10 seconds the segment light flashes as does the master warning and reset button. Once car is started light goes out and pressure is normal.
level is good and no other engine oil related lights are doing anything out of the norm.
