Default Rear Weltmeister Spring Issue - Diameter too large

I'm in the process of installing the rear Weltmeister springs and the spring does not fit the upper or lower spring seats. The Weltmeister springs are about one-half inch larger in diameter than the OEM ones and are exactly the same diameter as the front springs. The parts catalog lists two different part numbers for upper and lower spring seats but there is no part number stamped on mine so not sure which one I have. Anyone else face this issue? The fronts fit fine.

Attached is a picture of the stock spring left and Weltmeister right. I recall some post at some point that mentioned having to get the rear spring seats for the Bilstein suspension for something (running front springs on rear?), but don't recall the details. That would make sense because the Weltmeisters rears are the same outer diameter as the front springs.

I believe you need the rear spring seats from a pre-84 car. They are larger and will fit the Weltmeister springs.

Cheers!

Thanks Carl. Saw your post from 2011 in searching the forums that you had the Weltmeisters as well. Was hoping to get this wrapped up over the holiday weekend but looks like a call to 928 INTL is in order for Tuesday.

No. From what I've seen there were historically only two aftermarket springs for 928s, Eibachs and Weltmeisters. Currently there are no aftermarket springs in production unless you go with Carl's hypercoil kits.

But several guys on Rennlist have posted some for sale and a few guys messaged me when I was looking. If you are looking for some, just post a "parts wanted" thread. That's how I found these.

A lot of guys seem to only have the fronts installed. I'm not sure if that's because they had the same problem installing the rears as I did or if its another reason. You have the pre-84 spring seats, so your car should handle the size fine.

Also, some guys who only bought the front Weltmeisters used the stock OEM front springs on the rear since the OEM front spring is around 215 lbs/in and the rear Weltmeisters are 270. Not a huge difference in spring rate and the rear threaded sleeve is long enough to accommodate the shorter front OEM spring.

This option too requires the use of the rear 78-83 spring perch because the diameter of the front spring (all years) is the same as the 78-83 rear spring, from what I've been able to tell researching this topic.

Also, in addition to Motorsports, Ritek in UK offers a coil over option.

What are people paying for the Eibachs and Weltmeisters, if found?

If they were for sale today, what would be a reasonable retail cost for a low batch alternative?

Mine were also new never installed. I think I paid around $200?? Its been several months back, so don't recall exactly. To me anything up to about $300 would be fair and reasonable. The only alternative today is the 928MS hyper coil kit which is a really nice product, but at $619 is a bit pricey if your main goal is just to firm up the car a little and lower the ride height.

There is a bit of not quite correct information floating around on these with respect to the Weltmesiter spring rates. It has been reported on one thread that the Weltmesiters were the same spring as the Eibach.

It MAY be true that the Weltmeisters are made from the same spring steel as the Eibach-not sure, but the Weltmeisters are a linear spring. There is no progressive region. For me, this was critical. I may be in a minority but I really don't like the handling characteristics of springs that change rate under varying load. To me it becomes a challenge to get a correctly damped shock when the rate varies.

The Eibach spring was a progressive spring. The Weltmeister is linear, with the spring rate approximately equal to the low end of the progressive Eibach. I THINK they were 400 lb/in front / 270 rear, based on my recollection. They are very streetable and not too harsh when coupled with new Konis (or I presume Bilsteins as well). Very much like a more modern sports GT car.
