You really can't work on these cars without the books. It will become a futile exercise in frustration. And there's enough of that with proper manuals.
Roger (928s R Us) has a very comprehensive set on CD-Rom. it has the shop manual, PET (parts catalog) and service bulletins and a lot, lot more. A bargain at $75.
I strongly suspect you will be getting a lot of "care packages" from Roger, and the rest of the "Usual Suspects." Many of us have their numbers on speed dial.

The early cars do not use the cheap "53" fuel pump relay - they use a special relay with electronics...

If you have the money you would WAY ahead of the game if you bought this and then used the Euro as a parts car,

I think its great that you are going to bring the car back to life!! Is the car a 5spd? Looks like its lead a hard life. Hope you will do better by this once cherished 928.

Patience will prevail. My friend bought an old 6series bimmer for cheap that wouldn't shift properly. He looked at the shift linkage and found a wrench down there. Car works great now. He walked away a winner, you might too! Plus free wrench!!!

Good luck! I just recently completed restoration (if you can call it that!) of my 928 after it had some damage and neglect, so I look forward to seeing the future results!

I will be purchasing the CD soon, in the meantime I found the online PDF's, which is better than nothing. As for buying another car and using this one as parts, that would defeat the purpose of a cheap project! That and I'm sorta growing attached...

Yes it is a 5 speed manual, (Apparently not too common from what I've found?? Most of the 928's I've seen were automatic) and so far I have found no wrenches hiding down there... Just a few vacuum lines plugged with bolts - Ugh!

As for an update on the car, I completed purging the fuel lines of old gas, and checked the fuel distributor as suggested by karl ruiter. Thankfully it wasn't sticking so I put everything back together and tried the fuel pump again... Nothing. A few more hours of scrubbing electrical connections, and a new fuel pump relay and I finally got power to the pump, but it was stuck and no amount of percussive maintenance would fix it. I bought a replacement, which came today and after installing it, the car starts! Sort of.

The gunked up fuel pump...

With the new parts in, it starts almost instantly, goes up to around 1-2k RPM, then dies. I had some luck keeping it going with a little throttle, but couldn't get more than 10-15 seconds out of it. The PO did say that the warm up regulator needed to be replaced, but he didn't know very much about the car so I was hoping he was mistaken. Does this sound like the warm up regulator is a likely culprit?

It sounded fantastic when it was running... I don't think that's factory exhaust!

Fairly significant update: She starts and runs, but still chokes out if given any gas. I'll be going through the fuel system again and checking for vacuum leaks in the next few days.

Some of the gauges still don't work, which I think is a fuse... The idiot lights go on, then off so I'm assuming I have oil pressure. I'll feel much better once I have a working gauge!

Hopefully getting close to driving her off the trailer...

Before you do anything to the fuel system, get a set of mechanical fuel injection pressure gauges, as those are necessary to tune your car and find any issues. But that is a rock steady idle, which is a good start on a K-Jet.

Just get rid of the K&N filter so you don't do any damage to your engine.

Ugh... Why did anyone ever think poop brown was a good color for a car? What was it with the 70s?

Good luck! I am having a ball with my project and I am sure you will as well!!

If I could go back and do anything differently.......I would have thoroughly removed and flushed everything fuel related prior to ever turning the key. Draining is not enough on these CIS cars. Any bit of varnish or gunk really fouls these cars up.

Yours seems to idle fairly well, I agree that your problem likely lies in the FD but consider a full sanitation of every fuel component.

I like the brown too. It so period that it makes the car seem
that much more an antique to me. I wouldn't mind it at all.

I thought the motor sounded good btw.

If those KMs are correct that's like 75K miles.

Good luck with it.

You and AirTek should talk.
