An amazing story and fantastic job, Phil. Very inspirational to those of us who are just starting out on 928's. You are indeed living proof of the old adage "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger".

Having seen the car and had the pleasure of sitting in it and I can attest to the awesome snarl it emits - Phil's work is top notch.

thanks for the kind words Gents.
it has been literally a blood, sweat and tears project.
did very approx. 5k happy miles in her last year and is running sweet.
I will fully update the thread when the engine is in and I turn the key for the first time, which will answer the question of post #20.....
there is so much good information on this forum about all aspects and fixes for our 928's that it is like a second workshop manual for me.
thanks to all who contribute to help keep our cars on the road
cheers

an update:
so the date is now 6th sept 2015 and after covering as i say approx 5k happy miles she gets cleaned, guardX'ed and put under a dust cover for her winter sleep.
date is now 26th dec 2015 and i start to build up the " repaired and fixed" 6L short motor- block only with crank and pistons installed- that had been delivered back to me
and by 28th feb 2016 i have fully built it to a bare engine which includes the also "now fixed" cams.
from short motor to built bare engine takes me approx 60 hours.
11th march 2016 and i take car into my work and start to remove the perfectly good 5L engine i had enjoyed the pleasure of last year and install the 6L engine.
thanks for the metal filler neck Roger, looks better powder coated yellow.
engine on left is the freshly pulled 5L engine and on the right is the freshly built 6L
more to follow.

so by the 14th march 2016 the 6L engine is in, oil in and wired up but not fully finished, as all i want to do is see if it will start.
a few turns of the engine and it starts up, i ran it just for a couple of seconds and then switch off and fully finish the install
by the night of the 16th the 6L is fully installed and i start it up to bleed the cooling system- no smoke from the engine, but not running right with a very low tick over..
pulling plug leads off it is soon found 3 cylinders on the right bank- as looking from the front of the car- are just not firing as they should.
after more hours loking into it - plugs, leads, injectors and pulse to injectors all check out
after a night of warm beer i put it down to a possibility of 3 things:
1) i ****ed it up building it
2) i have missed something obvious
3) engine itself not right
4) cams not right
as 1,3 and 4 would mean an engine strip and i just did not have the time, i took it to a well known 928 specialist and left it with him
its now 30th of july 2016 and i collect the car which is no better and he is sure it is either 1,3 or 4 as above,
so it goes back in my garage, under dust cover with me fairly sure it would stay there for the next 10 years and i took a break from all things 928 before i had a breakdown

i would give anything to go back in time and not try to give up smoking and so not buy this car in the first place, but i guess all this must be punishment for failing to actually give up the ****
anyway its now 31st jan 2017 and i start to strip the original GT engine i removed from this car many years ago.
there is nothing wrong with it, its just a 90 model engine which has never been striped since it left the factory.
so intake off, heads off, block cleaned, etc, this all feels like ground hog day, again.....
so its now today and i have both heads cleaned, valves ground in, new seals fitted and heads now ready to fit.
block is cleaned and starting to install front components, as pictured-looks like a crack in the block through the waterpump recess but its not.
am removing the 6L and fitting this one in its place around june/july time and will update with a video link, if it runs well.
i will then be stripping the 6L to see what the problem is and if its my ***k up i will post pictures and admit it, if its not my ***k up i will post pictures and
cheers
