Any year GTS....because they are rare and have great hips.

86.5 - Lighter, older body style but more powerful engine.

90 GT - Almost as good as the GTS

87, electrically similar to the S3 but with the S4 goodies and styling.

+1 on 87.
Patriarch of the later models.
And, I like it analog.

You guys are biased. Having sold my 87 and 90 I'm no longer biased. If I were in the market those are the years I would focus on.

Many years ago I had an 86.5 and thought (and think) very well of it.

Early 87, squirter engine, adjustable, folding wing, antenna in window, no digital, no airbag, built before the bean counters took over!

The right answer for you depends on your priorities, mine are different than above.

My 35KMI 1981 OB is comparatively simple, was inexpensive, has a 16V (non-interference engine) and is a comfortable daily driver. Less to break down, yet lots of fun. Unpretentious.

78
85 Euro S
86.5
89 GT
95 GTS

I'd put the 91 GT or S4 next.

All 5-speed, except 91 S4 (if I had to do it all over...)
