Best years…………...

If I could own any 928 model, it would be an '89 Clubsport.
Sadly, probably never happen, as far as I know the only one thats come up for sale ever is the one Samuel (928cs) owned. So
my top pick is any no-sunroof 89 5-speed with LSD - GT or S4, doesn't matter as both have advantages the other doesn't.
Other than that.. in order of preference:
no sunroof 94/95 GTS
'88 Clubsport/SE
no sunroof early 78
no sunroof '86 16V 928S (has S4 brakes and the 310hp engine)
no sunroof 91 GT

81, nice and simple to work on.
Has the best oiling system out of all of the years (consumes the least and has the best pickup)
It still has the non turned down drive shaft in the torque tube. It also has the stronger solid half shafts that can have both sides bolts removed so you don't have to mess with the large wheel bearing nut.
Electronic injection for better efficiency and more possibilities for HP with Euro and early components as it also has the mildest camshafts and lowest compression which makes it safer to boost .
Still a remote possibility of not having a sunroof without emptying your bank account.
Also the option for automatic climate control so it can be just as modern (A/C wise) as the later cars.
And the list goes on.....
PS. Yes I am biased

Wow. This topic has never come up before...
... except last week.
And the week before.
And the week before that.

I'm happy with the two I have ... almost opposite ends of the spectrum. Simplicity and power of the '82 .... and the ultimate end of an era '95.
To round out the five, I'd go for a 91 GT, an 88 CS, and a '78.

By the way, on the 7 made, 2 at least are destroyed or too much modified to return to a good condition. That leaves you 5 cars to choose from, if you can find them and they are for sale.
My ex-car is not for sale.
Otherwise, I have chosen a lightly optioned manual 1987 S4 to replace my 1989 CS for goods reasons.
And I hope to find a nice 1978 one day.
All in all, the 1989 GT is the best "regular" production 928 to my taste.

I think I'm the first to choose '85. OB classic "Risky Business" styling, no center high mounted brake light, 32V power. I love my '84, but would love an extra 50+ HP.

'78 for classic style and more fun paint and interior selection
'89 GT for later-model performance
'86.5 for "S" style and S4 brakes and suspension
'80 Euro S for early and light, powerful sports car performance
'94 GTS for the full GT experience

I Like them all - lusting after a ROW 1986 S2 - twin dizzy 16v 310hp automatic.

78 5-speed
>80 Euro 5 speed
86.5 Auto (red only, lol)
Any year GT
Not a fan of the GTS. But if someone gave me one....
84 Euro, check carefully for the M28/21-22 engine. Some have been swapped, so I would look before paying.

'85 5-speed with spoiler delete and phone dials - the ultimate (GT shaming) sleeper.
