Default Advice on transmission problem!

Hi,

I would like to have the experts opinions on what to expect, from what happened to my transmission last week.
After a ride of 100/120 km, with absolutely no problem, about 2/3 k m’s from home and accelerating in 3rd gear, not hard, at about 3000rpm, suddenly the gear like disengages, but not completely, the gear shift doesn’t returns to neutral, it seems it stays in an intermediate position, and with a lot of grinding!!!
I immediately push the shifter to neutral and, very carefully, tried to engage 4th gear, which I did with no problem, and get home like that.
Parked the car, and 24 hours later, after having nightmares about what it could be, decided to start the car and the actual situation is these: reverse, 1 gear, 2 gear, 4 gear and 5 gear they all seem ok, and releasing the clutch the car starts moving, when in 3 gear, or at least in the normal 3 gear position it seems to engage, and with the clutch completely released the car doesn’t move a bit and doesn’t make any sound, like grinding or so! It’s like 3rd gear disappear!
The car has gone to the shop yesterday, of course the transmission is got to be open, but I would like to know your opinions on what has happened and what I can expect to find when opening the gearbox!

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Regards
