Default Brake pad replacement

This weekend I am going to replace brake pads on all 4 corners
Is there any particular brand better than another? This is for just street and highway driving. Anything I should look out for or anything really tricky to be careful of ?

I like ceramic pads. They don't give off as much brake dust.

I just put on PBR ceramic pads and they suck, way more dust than the Hawk Ceramic pads I had on my 85.

So not all ceramics are equal.

I would go with Hawk HPS

I usually use ceramic on all my cars .... The only downside is they tend to build up a lot of heat which will sometimes warp your rotors. Of course this depends on the quality and condition of the rotors.

My experience with ceramics (though not on a 928) was that the first few stops of the day, the brakes did not bite well. After the first couple, they worked very well.

I bought the pads that Tom @ 928 International recommended. Don't remember the brand offhand. They are pretty dust-free, stop fine, etc. No reading on pad life yet. I've had them on for a couple years now I think. No squeels. They are better when they are warmed up a little (aren't we all?) but the first few stops are more than acceptable. I don't drive the brakes hard, and replaced mine as part of a full brake system overhaul, not because the old ones (MetalMasters with 50k+ on them) were worn out.

I've been using EBC Red Stuff on three cars (Audi A8, MB SL55 AMG, and 928 GTS) for a while. I really like them - very low dust, good bite, no squeal, etc. BUT - you can't get them in time to install today!!

IF you are still undecided, drop me a PM and I'll put you in touch with the lowest cost source I've found. They drop ship from EBC, so takes about 10 days or so to get them. Occasionally, some for an S4 are listed on eBay.

I've previously used Akebono ceramics on two cars. Also low dust, but I like the 'cold' bite of the Red Stuff better.

Van, the PBR ceramics are worthless!

Installed a set of PBR's to replace my worn out Ferodo's and it felt like I'd lost half my brakes + they had no initial bite.

Observers at an autocross told me that I was locking the rears (Ferodo) before the fronts (PBR). Went back to Ferodo fronts and all is good again (but they're hard to find).

Just re-read this post and realized that most of us responders have S4 brakes on our cars, so YMMV.

I've got a set of front "S" calipers taken off of my '82 "Competition Package" car when I upgraded to S4's. Cheap, complete with a good set of Mintex Silverline pads which maybe a nice upgrade for you (got the rears as well, but I think they're the same as what you already have).

PM me if interested.

James
