What makes it special for me? Why, the fact that it's not a 911 and has a front mounted V8.

Not being a 911 is a major plus to me too - I couldn't bring myself to buy a car with the engine in such a daft position, even with the Engineering to work-around it. The 911 is a real clitorus car around here ..

They are fun to drive though. For some reason, the 928 is just more fun. It's a heavy car, but drives like it's not.

To me it's the anti Porsche, as I don't feel pigeon holed in with the 911 boys. It's great to be an outsider. I've owned a few 911's and hands down the 928 is a better car. Also I like the looks, I enjoy the challenge of doing all my own work, no matter how frustrating it is a times including the stupid questions I post here along with my typo's.
I commute to LA from the Bay Area once a month in mine. Aside from the crummy AC it's always a blast to drive and I never feel beat up when I arrive.
I have weak moments about buying an S4 or a GTS but then I really like the simplicity of mine.

The rear end. Not as wide as the wife's, but a hell of a lot sexier.

It has presence, the design was ahead of the day. I love the front on view, but I have admit to being an ar$e man! I agree with my fellow Kiwi.

The look, the feel, the sound, and even the smell match my tastes.

The whole "engineering package" make this car so special. There is not a single thing that I don't like when I drive it. BTW same for maintenance, I really like to work on my GTS (I owned a 944 turbo before). It is not that difficult and it rewards you with reliability if you invest in preventive maintenance.

The sound of the doors when you close them. There are not many cars around that you can identify when cranking the motor. How sexy is that ?
Everything is solidly built, even after "just" 22 years, my GTS feels like it left the factory yesterday and it looks like it was designed this year.

It was just way ahead of it's time...

1. It's a Porsche (lineage, reliability, engineering, German)
2. it's a GT - speed, handling yet long distance comfort
3. Stunningly beautiful, a head turner, a conversation piece, favorably recognized by car people and fortunately, ignored by the dingalings
4. even us week-end wariors can, to some extent, make repairs and do maintenance
5. rarity - I can go months without seeing another
6. Support groups - more family than a car club

Timeless, like Elvis and like Elvis I came late to being a big fan.

Just an aside but I recently saw a Vid on a 914 and got butterflies like I did 44 years ago when I first saw one in a Playboy ad.

This is another one of those "preaching to the choir" type threads...

But the following reason almost sums it up for me too:

The one additional for me is:
The car has a controversial element about it even today. There are many reasons for that. The one reason that I don't buy into is the "because it's not a 911."
