Default warning light

86 5-spd
I start the car, it runs great.
I turn on the lights and after a few seconds the central warning
light comes on.
I reset the warning light and it stays off.
This only happens when I turn the lights on.
All lights are working as they should.
Any ideas?

Unless the warning indicator bulb on the instrument cluster is burnt out, whatever the failure is, it will tell you there. If it is giving you a tail lamp warning it could be as easy as having the wrong wattage bulb in the rear side markers.

^ This being the first thought, and secondly a grounding problem. Central warning unit grounds at MP IV. So does the illumination for the headlight switch and numerous (but not all) bulbs through the Black/Blue system for illumination of the dash, pod switches, and center console illumination (cigarette lighter bulb grounds at MP V). Do all these bulbs illuminate ? You could have a corrupted ground going to MP IV when system 'charged'. When not turned on, a bulb's filament maybe acting as a ground.

checking some things.
I turn the key on all warning lights appear lit.
Start the car and they all go off except
the "stop lamp" light.
As soon as I touch the brake, it goes off.
All brake light are working as they should.

When you turn the key on before starting the car, how many warning lights do you see?

Okay, I can deal with that.
Still get the warning "!" when I turn the lights on.
Going to swap out all the rear bulbs.

Nine warning lights.
Four on the left and five on the right.

Before doing the swap, with its expenditure, remove a bulb and see if you get the specific warning on the dash. If the tailight warning illuminates, you know the problem is elsewhere.

Do you have "Belt Tension, Tail Lamp, Stop Lamp, Wash Fluid, and Coolant" lights on the left?

Don't know about the 86.5, but those are what you should see on an S4, along with "Parking Lights."
