Some time ago I asked a similar question around Magnus Walkers cars.

I think the 928 followers are more individual than Singer / Walkers customers. While their cars are special, 928 drivers seem to do their own thing. And we don't seem to agree on what is the "perfect" 928

I can see spending $100k on a 928, but not buying someone else's effort at that price.

My dream garage will have a 100% factory fresh, fully optioned 1985 928s2 and a OB, lightweight with manual GTS running gear.

( I don't think $100 k is enough)

Got a little carried away tonight- Here's my personal 928 Singer recipe:

86.5 chassis
1978 Arrow Blue paint- Single stage Glasurit
No sunroof
Body color S3 spoiler, formed in steel
Rear wiper delete
Aero mirrors with manual joystick adjusters, body color
No freaking rubstrips
Steel GTS-esque rear fender flares
Steel front fenders, flared like those from factory Exclusive Option X38
Hood louvers with symmetrically radiused edges and underlying black mesh grille-work, feeding ITBs below
Any/all antennae hidden in 3rd brakelight recess and/or in the windshield
Dual exhaust rear bumper cover, Euro license plate relief
Dark silver-gray brushed anodized door lock surrounds, window trim, badges, center cap crests
Integrated 1.5" steel rollcage, a la Ruf CTR
Hidden harness bar passing through dummy rear center console, behind rear seatbacks. For HPDE/track days
928S brake ducts, body color
Dark platinum anodized lug nuts
Euro rear foglamp

5.8 Liter nikasiled mini-stroker / rev monster:
104 mm bores, GTS-stroke crank, Carrillo H-beams, JEs
Simard cams, ITBs made to look like PMO trumpets, ported heads, drysumped, Alpha N
928 Cup 4-1 true dual exhaust, twin exits in rear bumper cover
GT transmission, early 40% LSD, carbon clutch
'Simplified' '88 S4 CE panel, front and rear body harness, '88 LH/EZK harness. ST2 PEMs.
S4 suspension, Boge Reds, Clubsport springs
GTS steering rack and 100 bar pump
Clubsport alternator
GT oil cooler, Anderson 2-cooler radiator, Hans' fan shroud
GB fuel, oil, coolant hoses throughout
Bi-Xenon projector lamps built in an 8" H4 reflector shell and polycarbonate lenses, a la the Singer headlamps
Headlight buckets still rotate into position- they're iconic!
S front spoiler- stock
18" 928 Classics' Phone dials, 18x9 ET 69, 18 x 10.5 ET63
F50 Brembo brakes in front, S4 rear. 2 piece Alcon rotors, no sissy crossdrilling or slotting
Either no ABS, or super-whamodyne modern 996/997/991 RSR ABS. Not sure which....
Frenched fuel filler area, with exposed metal ('78) fuel filler cap

Early 928 sport seats, Cork, Champagne laser etched Pascha, adaptable cushion inserts for 5 point harnesses
Blaupunkt Bamburg QTS radio, gutted to control wifi-enabled NUC carputer in the glovebox
Early S4 gauge cluster: 911 SC gauges re-faced in 928 font, calibrated for 7500 rpm redline, 200 mph speedo
911 multigauge with 928 font, for coolant temp, oil temp, fuel level, and oil pressure
Heuer chronograph
The 928 equivalent of 911 RS/RSR door panels
GTS dash, Cork, without a passenger side airbag
Onboard ST2, LC2, and carputer hidden in glovebox
HVAC head controller simplified- defrost, center vent, footwell only for heat
A/C activated by 'leftover' detent in HVAC head slider
Foreshortened/simplified center console, window switches moved to door panels
Simplified padded armrest on transmission tunnel.
Jerry Feather- hotrodded center console inserts
Early (78-79) upper center vent grille and ****

That's probably TMI already....

Rob, I am impressed not only by the detail you think of, but the fact you wrote it down.

Have you costed this vision?

I cheated a bit, I had the Singer website open on another browser and am guilty of stealing/adapting a few ideas.

I bet I could do this for less than $125K-ish.

$5K '86.5 speed donor
$5K in S4+ electrical bits and gauges
25K in bodywork, trim, and paint
50K in engine/suspension
10K in wheels/brakes
15K in interior work
15K in all the fantasyland/unobtanium parts (?)

I suggest we start a fund to buy a lottery ticket every week. The winnings to fund the build.

Mine's easier than that.. well, to write down anyway

Start with a straight S4 with no accident damage then add..

1. Bodywork like Greg Nettles' awesome '87 S4 (aero mirrors, rear GTS fenders and S4 rear bumper), minus sunroof
2. Mike Simards' 7.0L stroker engine
3. Greg Brown complete exhaust capable of meeting street noise regulations
4. Full-leather interior with laser-etched Pascha pattern on the seats, shifter boot, door card inserts and front/rear console lids.
5. Dinsdale 6-speed manual trans conversion with strong enough trans for the engine.
6. F50 brakes like Greg Gray and Sterling have

The hard bit would be colours.. maybe a light-metallic green or blue (Horizon Blue, Crystal Green etc.), and a mixture of tan/black interior? Or mahogany interior and a metallic brown like Nougat Brown?

Total cost for the above would probably hit $150k, if not higher by the time you factor in WYAIT for stuff like interior noise insulation, stereo etc.

Slightly off topic, but have been waiting for a two door Panamera to finally come out of Porsche with a V8 (twin turbo V8?) and PDK setup. That would be one wicked ride and would be very close to what a 928 used to be back in the day. Wait a few years then pick it up for half price.

Or contract with a company to chop up a Panamera to make it a two door like I've seen done on TV with four door Mercedes.

Okay, back to building a dream 928.

and my version singer 928;

my 1985 S2 auto(2.54)
Exterior;
paint - jaguar's stratus gray metallic - very metallic, high gloss, dark but not black
Carbon fiber front spoiler, Carbon fiber rear wing by jacquemond, Carbon fiber aero mirrors
Wheels- those 18in twists from the blue car in post #15 in gunmetal with Michelin pilot super sport tires
Hid driving and fogs unless led's available

Interior:
Early regular 928 seats by Champagne in Cork with silver stitching
Black leather everywhere with silver stitching except roof and A pillars in black Alcantarra
Black Wilton carpets, silver seat belts
991S steering wheel upgraded by west coast shop
period stereo, center console in piano black gloss

Mechanicals;
Socal Joe's suspension
TT by Constantine
Greg Brown headers into my SS exhaust
Carbon Ceramic brakes with silver calipers
keep engine exterior as is with polished spider but internals redone- larger valves, Aussie Greg's pistons and rods, GB's crank and if necessary Simards lipped sleeves to run at 7000rpm and achieve 500/500 crank.

And waiter, while I am waiting for my Rob Edward's 928 to be brought around, please send over the sommelier - I need to ask him if there is any of the '59 Montrachet left with a good cork...

The French dude 'Olivier' mostly copied Strosek designs - the big wing is a Strosek copy (and I do have the Jacquemond version), while the rear upper valance is also a Strosek copy - not sure about the rear end on the pics you posted.

Strosek was not happy about it... but their lead time when I wanted a wing was just far too long. The Jacquemond stuif is well made.

Got it, now is that with or without fries?

Based on power to weight of each, the White Zombie in it's prime would smoke a Singer 911 on the street and track.

You're halfway there Rob just make it a bit more luxurious.

BTW, I almost painted mine arrow blue and still may down the road.

But not single stage again.

I can't believe the 928 will languish on as it had forever..not the way this car gets looks. I swear i had a bad *** IROC clone 911 (without flares though) in a sparkly fresh prussian blue.

It got no where near the attention of my RS (which isn't camera friendly)

Been busy lately and hadn't seen the 928 in a week or so.

I went into the garage and just admired the car. I just want it perfect.

Definitely see the similarity in the wings with a couple subtle differences unless it's just camera angles, can't comment about the rest of their collections. The yellow car looks like it jumped out of the Disney movie, whereas the black has just enough tweaking w/o looking kit-carish.

Nice to hear that Jacquemond makes good stuff.

My list adds up to $39,500 ex engine.

Recipe:

'79 no rub strips & no sunroof chassis. Factory sound deadening replaced with modern lightweight material. Painted simple bright white.

Carbon fiber front & rear spoilers, both slightly larger & longer than stock.

Fenders reworked: fronts get flared a good 1.5", rears GTS-esque but flared to match front flare contour.

Wheels: of course wide phone dial replicas.

Suspension massaged with decent streetable track-day setup. Lower than stock but not drastically.

Interior: lightweight Recaros upholstered in Tartan cloth, simple black everything else. Rear seat delete.

Early S4 block, high compression pistons, mildly massaged S4 heads w/ GT cams, Greg Brown intake and exhaust, a few hundred hours of Sharktuning, and a Porktensioner.

5-spd with lightweight flywheel, compromise street/track clutch, shorter geared rear dif.

Really, the magic is making everything just plain work together harmoniously. Singers got their status by good marketing of their insane attention to detail, and detail which is quite artfully planned and executed. They are not racecars, they have far more subtlety and culture to them. So the build must be 20% assembly and 90% tuning to perfection for a truly 110% car.

/daydream
