Default P/S line from reservoir to body.. can I fix this?

I have this line that transitions from my P/S reservoir and turns into a hard line and travels towards the front of the car. I would like to replace just this smaller line and add a manual clamp rather than the crimp style that is currently on here from Porsche.

- Can I take this clamp off and either just replace the clamp with a better one or possibly add a new hose as well?
- What is the best way to remove the clamp itself.. sheers of some sort and cut the crimped portion?
- If I do replace the hose... does anyone know the ID and OD so I can go get a foot or less of it somewhere?

Thanks for any help! The car is a 91 S4.

Cheers,
Bryan

Faced with similar leak I cut the line back, bought a brass fitting with 2 nipples from HD and a close match inside diameter hose from Advance Auto Parts and used some hose clamps. It's been a year and no leaks. I do tighten them up from time to time.

Explain again where and how you attached to the hard line? Not sure if this is the way I want to go.

How much pressure is in this line... I would think pretty low.

Keep the ideas and experience coming.

Thanks,
Bryan

If you are leaking at the point the hose transitions to the pipe, you will need to remove the line, cut off the clamp, and run hose to the reservoir. You can use a hacksaw to split the clamp. I have done that with A/T lines that ran to the transmission and used clamps. It is not high pressure at all. Make sure you use a high quality hose clamp and red or blue locktite. I will eventually replace the cooling loop, but removing it is a PITA - though it seems you are almost there.

Nah, don't try to remove the cooling loop, that was one of the first parts added to the front portion of the body-in-white at the factory. Back when I had even less common sense than I do now, I R&R'ed the cooling loop for a new one:

You will note that in 7-1/2 years, there have been no responses to that thread, along the lines of 'why in hell did you take the front of the car apart when you could have just replaced the rubber portion of the line?', like people are suggesting above. This forum is so polite....

Rob, I see your point.

To the OP - let us know if you could remove the clamp and what you had to move or remove to do it - I won't be far behind you.

cut the swage off,
then take the hose to the hose shop buy a few feet of hose,
then use fuel injection clamps to reattach the hose to the line and reservoir.

NOTE if you can find Aeroquip hose then buy the next smaller size hose that fits the metal line.
cut off about a 2 inch piece and trim the outer covers down till the inner hose is exposed,
use this to downsize the smaller diameter of the metal line end ,
use some Hondabond 4 on the outside of this smaller hose, let it setup about 10 mins before joining
then slide the smaller hose onto the metal line, then, slide the larger outer hose over the trimmed inner hose use 2 clamps.

Simple fix, cut the old one off and call one of our favorite vendors and purchase TWO of the pump to res hoses. Install one as you should and then there is one end of that same hose that you can cut which will give you the exact length and bend radius as the one to the cooler. Install with EFI clamps as Stan says and you will have a decade of no issues.

This suggestion is genius! In past I have got local hydraulic hose supplier to supply rubber line matching ID of the rubber version of cooler line but it's not radiused.

That was on my last S4. Was planning same job on my current one but now I'll just get another supply hose.

To original poster - I cut the crimp very easily with Dremel and cut-off wheel attachment. The line is return from rack to reservoir do is under very low pressure

This area is a real PITA! When I replaced the high pressure line (pinhole leak), I reworked the reservoir to pump connections- fitted a brass right angle with a size step in it, which removed an annoying bend in hose, and its all much tidier now. When this hose needs replacement again I can use generic as the size change is gone.

I need to make a correction, I don't use EFI that are 14mm to 15mm, I have other clamps that are larger for these hoses. The hose on the res is much larger than the cooler side. Just mix and match and you will be happy.

, bought the hoses a while back, but havn't done the job yet, hoses were not expensive, and does seem to be the simplest way, there was a write up somewhere else on RL, or at least mentioned in another thread.

It's easy and cheap. Talking $16-$18 each for the hoses, $30 or so for the res. Get a dremel with a cut off wheel and go to town.
