Default Mecum Auction: '89 5 speed w/ 16K Miles - SOLD: $50,000

No affiliation. Owned by a friend of one of my neighbors. Pretty much my dream car. Should be interesting to see what it brings.

Wow, I will be taping this. I watch Mecum and the other car auctions when they are broadcast and I have only seen a 928 come up during coverage on Mecum once. The normally somewhat knowledgeable (at least for muscle cars) announcers said untrue and unflattering things about the car. We'll see if they get it right this time.

It appears to be a GT, club sports and dual exhaust tips.

Ouch!
Looks like a real time capsule.
Hope it will get the price it deserves.

It does look nice, but some auction announcer will probably bad mouth the car due to ignorance on the subject.

Unless there is a true 928 aficionado in the crowd, I doubt it will command the price it deserves.

Seems like Barrett Jackson or a higher end auction like Sotherby's would be a more appropriate venue for this car. Just IMHO….

I think the Spring Auburn auction would have been a better place to take this car rather than Mecum. The Mecum crowd is more about domestic muscle. Barret-Jackson would have been good, but since they are going to be in Indy the week after I just think that Spring Auburn would be a better venue for a 928. (I think this is the last RM auction at Auburn.....if I'm not mistaken Mecum is taking over both Auburn actions after next weekend)

ECU upgrade? Like a new LH or aftermarket chips?

If Mecum doesn't draw a strong bid hey it may be a great opportunity.

Are those Designh 90s? Looks like a Champagne cassette box. I agree about the comments about Mecum, muscle and the announcers, although I've not heard them bad mouth a shark. What I heard was a lot of dead air . . . . they don't know what to say, the metric stuff is just too much for them. Same with the audience, there just aren't many at Mecum looking for a P-car. BUT, that would benefit a knowledgeable buyer.

Its a GT - very nice, and should fetch big money (clues are the shifter, wheels, exhaust tips, and temp gauge on the dash).

One of the best variants of the 928, arguably the best to some as its the mass-market version of the clubsport (same cams, transmission, wheels, exhaust etc.), and has mechanical LSD instead of PSD, no airbags and digital dash.

The armrest looks like it might be a factory phone prep one? (there were a few versions of the phone)

With that mileage, I'd expect it to fetch north of $30k at an auction full of heathens.. more in a properly organised sale with good photos. MUCH more if the seller was someone like MW.

They're the forged lightweight Clubsport wheels - 8" wide fronts, 9" wide rears.. cost around $6k for a new set in that condition.

It looks like an extended center armrest from Paul or Rob.

I hope it will sell for over 40k. Close to 50k... At least.
But that's me.

Should bring some bidders out of the woodwork, IF they know about it.

Chances are plenty high a dealer buys it and its shortly for sale again at a new market price.
