I'm not sure what causes it, but I too have seen very fragile rings come out of motors. They just break when you pop the piston out and are like they are made of glass. Normally they are pretty tough. I would guess it must be from either a temperature effect or a chemical effect, but I don't know.

New block assembly for $300 was off ebay. I was the only bidder.

Yeah I couldn't resist so I posted this message to them:

" Dear porschepeople,

Guys not to be a wise guy but - are you serious? A 928 engine with blown head gasket(s) for $750? It's a boat anchor. If it were a M28/11,12,21,22 then it would be different but an M28/15 smog-mobile engine? I just bought a M28/19 with problems for $100 minus the intake of which I already have two. Just trying to suggest that you strip it or dump it for the commensurate $250 scrap value"

Trying to be nice and alert them to the fact that this really is a fraud. I'll prolly get flamed for it but I just can't stand by and say / do nothing.

The engine had been apart, block split and all. Leo at R&L Engines said likely they used cheap iron rings instead of the correct rings and they just snapped as she fired up. Another factor could have been ring groove fit was sloppy causing ring slap and then breakage.

So everyone I just tallied up my spend in "Inga" and I was shocked when I discovered it to be around $6500 and still no engine in sight.

Parting her out is out of the question as she isn't worth much - 78 euro car with an interior rated at a 6.

I've got $2500 in the reman'd heads, reman'd CIS, new PK Tensioner and full engine gasket set which of I were lucky I might get $2000 for and another $1500 for Inga's body - sound so morbid :-P

So I guess I am going to go for it and drop a 5L and M220 in her and have my fun tearing up the street :-)

In the mean time I have just about finished my Volvo 740SE Turbo that can hold down a steady diet of 1.4 bar and get to 100MPH in a real hurry and she (Olga) is an automatic to boot. Just gotta neaten up under the bonnet now and for up some loose electrical ends. The B230FT is an amazing little 4 cylinder and I suspect this one is at 275-300RWHP;-) Pictures to follow soon.

Trust me on this it will only get WORSE ! From the current thread about driving cross country...... " Previous owner was phenomenal with maintenance. It was a daily driver for the last 55K in Las Vegas. One way 75 mile trips daily. Have all receipts for last 5 years, grand total of 26K. "

Yes he SAID $26,000. 00 In 5 years for 55,000 miles !!!

OMG! That is the cost of a Ferrari or Lambo in maintenance per mile! WHY would you do that for a 928?! :-D for the very same reason I have $6000+ in a dead body:-D

If you play poker you know what pot committed means....you are in so far that there is no good way to fold....
You get caught up in I have fixed so many things what else could possibly fail ? and after spending that much the car OWES me so I will keep it and drive it.......followed by pot committed... I am in so far no way I can not stop now.....plus how do I explain it to the wife ?? and if I dump it for 1/2 of what I have "invested" ( hate that term since it is money SPENT) how can I justify that loss ???
And yes in ONE very important aspect the 928 really is a SUPER CAR and that is the cost to keep one fully functional and looking great...not good or bad just how it typically is !

Yep that is why they say better to buy a well maintained Porsche. Even with that in the equation I've seen this happen with a major fall like a snapped cylinder stud on a carrera you thought you were going to hop in and drive. Now you're in the realm of 50 hours of labor and $2500+in parts and now you just increased your purchase price $7-10K of you don't have the ability to do the job yourself.

Like I said, I think I did anyway, this is education for me. I made it thru building a running 944S from two bad engines so I decided to learn about the 928, a car I have always wanted to own for a few days.

Basically if I can't take it apart and figure out what makes it tick I don't want it :-)

The wife's attitude is always - dump her :-D She knows only too well about my affairs with these mechanical floosies.

Well I am cautiously optimistic - again. I just purchased a 1984 M28/22 complete from top to bottom. So hopefully in a few weeks we'll be behind the wheel.

Gonna have a LOT of extra parts 2 sets of; CIS K-jet systems, heads and cams, RaRst forged rods, crank, hardware and small parts. I guess I'll have a party on the for sale forum once we're done and share the trash with the rest of the 928 crowd here.

Thanks everyone and stay tuned as we reconvene the installation after the new engine shows up.

So it's official. The M28.22 is on its way here for a whopping total $1250 delivered to my shop door. This is a complete running unit from CIS to headers.

Okay so now I have a question that borders insanity. Since the 928 and Ford V8 share the same firing order and timing characteristics; has anyone successfully retrofitted a Ford injection system to a CIS 928?

M28.11 arrived just an hour ago. So we're of to the races so to speak. Let's hope the process becomes less troublesome.
