Default Igition switch mechanical and electrical

Hi guys,
I have had some minor trouble with my ignition switch: sometimes I can turn off the ignition and pull out the key with the radio still running. If I reinsert the key and turn it further to the left, I can turn off the radio, and pull the key. Similarly, when I start the car and release the key, sometimes the radio does not turn on, unless I jiggle the key.
Anyway, I have ordered a new electrical part of the switch, and a cam and screws for the connection from the cylinder to the switch. I am going to replace both since I have the pod out. Has anyone got any insights to these processes?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Be sure to disconnect battery before unscrewing the switch.

Thanks. It would be easy to forget to disconnect battery. Barry, I saw your thread when I searched yesterday. Sounds very appropriate for my job.
Thanks again,
Dave

Hi,
It's 50 degrees in Chicago today, so I took time to install my new ignition switch and cam. The switch supplied by 928 Int'l is a 964 part. The old one was a 928 part. They seem identical. The cam and parts are different than original. The shaft on the cam is about 5/16" longer, and that is the reason for the spacer ring and longer screws supplied in the kit. That makes it even more awkward to install those screws, but at least they are phillips head, so it's a wash. The lock cylinder has to be removed to swap the cam. there is a rolled pin holding the cylinder in place that must be pulled. Once inside, you will see the cam, plus a plastic part, plus a spring. Pull all out and reassemble on the new cam. Reinstall cam assembly, cylinder and electrical switch part with spacer and you are ready to go.
I found the action more positive with the new parts, but I can still pull my key before hitting the full left position. Maybe the lock is worn inside.
Thanks for helping.
Dave

But you don't know if its the switch or the cam that caused your problem cause you replaced both?

Yep. I actually think it was both. I figured on replacing the switch, and for $12 I put in a new cam while I had the pod off. I really had 2 symptoms: radio not on after starting car, and key can be pulled with radio still on. I think the first was in the switch and I had hoped the second is in the cam. I now feel that there is also wear in the cylinder/tumblers.
Anyway it's done and I hope not to back in there for a while.
Good luck,
Dave
